The prevalence of mental illnesses is increasing, affecting a larger number of individuals.

Different mental illnesses have different effects on individuals who live with them, impeding cognitive processes and decision-making. This often leads to neglect of personal well-being, including for those recovering from substance dependency.

The individuals face numerous barriers and challenges in tackling addiction in their lives. People in recovery for substance abuse commonly encounter challenges in developing new coping strategies. As they are on the path to recovery, a different approach is necessary.

The individuals who attend rehab may face difficulties when trying new strategies, such as replacing smoking with reading a book. The transition from rehabilitation to home can also be stressful, as many struggle to adjust to the less structured environment after being in protected rehab facilities (Maisel & Raeburn,

...

2008). Another challenge in early sobriety is establishing new relationships. It is important for those recovering from substance abuse to form connections within the community. However, this may be challenging as not everyone will be willing to forgive and forget their past (Mignon, 2015).

The newly sober individual may experience feelings of distress and letdown upon realizing that their friends and family lack trust in them. It can be tough for those in recovery to understand and accept that certain relationships may be permanently damaged, thus impeding their progress towards recovery (Finley & Lenz, 2009). Moreover, during the recovery journey, finding a sense of meaning in life becomes a challenge. For an extended period, the person's life may have revolved around substance abuse. As drugs and alcohol are no longer the focal point, there arises a necessity to uncover a new purpose in life.

from drug and substance abuse may find a renewed sense of purpose in fellowships and new hobbies, which can be challenging. Overcoming character flaws is an obstacle for those striving for perfection, as changing one's character is a difficult but crucial undertaking. Common character flaws include jealousy, selfishness, anger, and laziness (Maisel & Raeburn, 2008).

During their treatments, individuals recovering from substance abuse experience stigma in society, which can significantly impact their outcomes. This ongoing stigmatization may manifest through treatment programs blaming patients for relapse or shaming them for their perceived weakness. Consequently, individuals may feel unappreciated, ultimately leading to unsuccessful treatments. It is important to acknowledge that people enter treatment in a psychologically vulnerable state.

Addiction is often linked to a feeling of failure, which hinders the recommended recovery process. In a society that discriminates against those in recovery, it becomes challenging for patients to find the nurturing environment they need to cultivate seeds of hope for a successful recovery (Atkins, 2014). Furthermore, individuals in recovery often face the stigma of being constantly suspected of relapsing.

The society holds the belief that if a person becomes an addict, they will always remain an addict. This belief causes feelings of insecurity and a lack of appreciation for the patient. The society's lack of trust in individuals who have struggled with substance abuse leads to loss of hope and inadequate treatment. It is essential for the family members and the community to fully accept and support these individuals in order for them to achieve complete recovery (Finley ; Lenz, 2009).

Combining medical treatments with behavioral therapy is the most effective approach for achieving successful recoveries in patients. It

is important to customize treatment options to address the specific drug use patterns, psychological issues, and social problems of each patient. Various medications are utilized at different stages of treatment to assist patients in ceasing substance abuse, remaining in treatment, and avoiding relapse. These medications are designed to initially treat withdrawal symptoms when the individual discontinues drug use. Subsequently, certain medications aid in gradually acclimating the patient's brain to the absence of drugs, and ultimately preventing relapse (Mignon, 2015).

Behavioral therapies are essential for helping patients to engage in positive life purposes by modifying their attitudes and behaviors related to drug use (Maisel & Raeburn, 2008). These therapies also support the development of life skills required to handle stressful situations and environmental triggers that may intensify the urge for drugs. Treatment programs for substance abuse are effective due to the availability of individualized counseling and group motivation (Mignon, 2015). Additionally, family members provide resources such as financial support to ensure access to basic necessities for the patient.

When individuals lack the necessary requirements, it can cause stress and potentially lead to a relapse into drug use. Fortunately, there are local resources available to help ensure that patients stay occupied and avoid idleness. Engaging in tasks within the community and at home, such as cleaning and washing, can help keep individuals in recovery mentally engaged (Mignon, 2015).
