The only faculty that is able to contemplate itself and also judge others, such as grammar and music, is the rational faculty.

The gods have granted us the ability to use appearances wisely, which is the greatest gift. Zeus informs Epictetus that by using our rational faculty correctly, we can avoid blaming, lamenting, or flattering others. However, this can only happen if we do not become too attached to things like friends, brothers, or the weather, as humans tend to do. The key to distinguishing between rational and irrational is discipline, as they manifest differently for each person. Differentiation requires both external evaluations and what is suitable for each individual.

Individuals with reduced sense of shame or modesty are considered strong, while those who lack understanding are seen as being in a negative state. Even without distractions from the study of morality, there is no advancement in virtues.

The power of argument and the art of persuasion can be greatly improved through practice and language mastery. Those who are lacking in strength and education are vulnerable to becoming easily arrogant and egotistical when possessing these abilities. We are all global citizens, and confining ourselves to our local communities exposes our weaknesses and limited thinking. The ultimate and all-encompassing community is formed by the alliance between humans and God.

We, as creatures, are all meant to have a connection with God.
