In the novel, Celie is portrayed as the protagonist who experiences difficulties because of her race and gender. She faces abuse at home and lacks self-esteem. Nevertheless, as the narrative advances, Celie goes through a transformative process from a vulnerable youth to a confident individual with social consciousness. She cultivates self-compassion and embraces love from others. Along her path, she confronts various challenges that act as adversaries, including racial and gender discrimination within her own family.

Celie undergoes victimization from various sources. Initially, her father commits the terrible act of raping and impregnating her. Afterwards, he effectively sells her to her husband, Albert, who continues the cycle of abuse by physically assaulting her and forcing her into unwanted sexual encounters.
