The movie "Fletch", starring Chevy Chase, follows the story of an investigating reporter named Erwin Fletcher "Fletch" from a Los Angeles newspaper. He poses as a beach junkie in order to uncover the drug trade and identify the mastermind behind it. While on his undercover mission, Fletch encounters a businessman who requests him to commit murder, so that the wife can receive the life insurance policy. Instinctively smelling something fishy, Fletch investigates the situation like a true professional. Throughout his journey, Fletch engages in various illegal acts and crimes, all in pursuit of the truth. Despite having good intentions, Fletch finds himself in deep trouble. Alan offers Fletch a sum of $1,000 to visit his residence and hear a proposition. He assures Fletch that his proposal is not of a sexual nature.
After driving to Stanwyk's mansion, Fletch and Stanwyk engage in a conversation inside Stanwyk's study. In this dialogue, Stanwyk proposes offering Fletch $50,000 in cash. The reason behind this offer is for Fletch to seemingly murder Stanwyk, allowing him to avoid a painful cancer death and ensuring his wife Gail collects the insurance money. To execute this plan, Stanwyk reveals that he will furnish Fletch with a firearm stored in the desk drawer and the cash will be readily available in an open safe. Fletch simply needs t
show up at the designated time in a few days, shoot Stanwyk, seize the money, and utilize pre-planned airline tickets to establish a new life overseas. At this point, Fletch remains unaware that Stanwyk, who is presented as the film's primary antagonist, is actually plotting to kill him.
