Yes! Love & Hip Hop, my favorite TV show, is about to start. However, despite being a great show, it presents a harmful view of the world. Television has a negative impact on our perception of reality by showcasing negative characters and adult content. When we see these negative characters on TV, we are influenced to aspire to be someone other than ourselves. Bullies, drug dealers, rapists, crack heads, and murderers are among the portrayals that are frequently seen on TV shows. Some shows and movies even glorify these characters; however, they are actually the weakest link.
An example of a movie that glorifies bad characters is "Boozy N the Hood". This movie depicts drug dealers and murderers as cool individuals; however, in the end they face consequences for their actions. On the other hand, one of my favorite TV shows Law and Order:
...Special Victims Unit demonstrates that bad guys are not cool and ultimately face imprisonment or death. Unfortunately, most TV shows and movies portray these negative characters as popular figures which leads real-life people to emulate them. This becomes particularly troubling for children who see these bad guys as role models when they should not be. Ultimately, these characters have a detrimental effect on our community.
Furthermore., aspiring to be like these TV characters will lead one nowhere in life.
Television programs that contain adult content, such as pornography or violence, are detrimental in their portrayal of the world. Shows like Jerry Springer, Swamp People, Marry, and Steve Wilkes exemplify this inappropriate content. Despite being unsuitable for children, they continue to watch these shows which often feature nudity and profanity. Exposur
to such programming may lead children to use curse words in their interactions with others. For instance, Marry showcases profanity and presents negative parental figures. It is important not to permit children from watching TV shows that contain adult content. Television has a negative impact on our perception of the world by promoting unfavorable characters and displaying explicit material; thus influencing our view negatively overall. In my opinion, these factors contribute to why television is harming how we perceive the world.
