Comparing Time Machine and Gulliver’s Travel Essay Example

Both narrators are able to escape from the tiny people, in Time machine; the machine saves the time traveler while Gulliver is saved by a kind friend whereby he escapes from the conviction. There is also a world of giants in both stories, for instance, Gulliver finds himself in a community of people who are 72 feet tall and he is not able to use their facilities since is too tiny. The two narrators travel into several lands, the time traveler is attacked by a giant crab while Gulliver is carried through a traveling box by giant people. The two stories have unhappy endings, the time traveler is never able to travel back home while Gulliver becomes insane after he refuses to live among the Yahoos. "When Gulliver finally returns home, he is so disgusted by humanity that he refuses to speak with anyone, preferring to spend his time in his stables, talking to the horses." (Swift, p. 339)

Differences

However, the two stories have some differences. The time traveler travels through his Time machine while Gulliver travels through ships. The time traveler only makes two journeys on his Time machine whereby he is not able to return home for the second time. On the other hand, Gulliver makes four journeys through ships whereby he finds himself in strange lands but he is able to return home every time. The time traveler is not able to live with the strange creatures peacefully, he is always in conflict with them, for instance, he is attacked by giant

crabs in one of his stops and the tiny people try to capture him to seek revenge. Unlike the time traveler, Gulliver is able to live peacefully with the creatures. For instance, he likes the Houyhnhnms so much that he is unable to live among the Yahoos anymore. The tiny people in the two stories have different behaviors.

In Time machine, the tiny people live peacefully and they are lack discipline and curiosity, hence there is neither need for neither strength nor intellect for survival. On the other hand, in Gulliver's travel, the tiny people value good behavior and even have a court. Therefore, intelligence is importance for one's survival since the tiny people are curious. In Gulliver's travel, each land he travels to only contains one kind of creatures who live independently of other people or creatures. However, in Time machine, the human beings in the future had evolved into two different kinds whereby one group lived comfortably without working while the other only came up at night, they worked and provided food for the other group but also fed on them, the time traveler described the setup as a rancher and livestock relationship.
The creatures in Gulliver's story live comfortably without the fear of anything.

On the contrary, the Morlocks in Time machine fear light and only come up at night when there is darkness. The creatures also live underground where they cannot be seen by other creatures. In Gulliver's travels, the stories are of people who live normally and carry out their livelihood normally. On the contrary, the time traveler makes several stops into the future and at some point he comes to the end

of the world whereby all creatures are either dead or dying slowly. "So I traveled, stopping ever and again, in great strides of a thousand years or more, drawn on by the mystery of the earth's fate, watching with a strange fascination the sun grow larger and duller in the westward sky, and the life of the old earth ebb away. (wells p. 11.8)

Conclusion

The two stories have a lot of similarities and differences. The travelers in both stories encounter strange lands with strange people. Unlike Gulliver, the time traveler never makes it back home and he does not like the strange lands. On the other hand, Gulliver likes the land of the Houyhnhnms and is devastated on getting back home which leads him to insanity.
