The film "Bend it Like Beckman", directed by Grinder Chad, explores the impact of traditional values on family dynamics. The main characters, Jess and Jules, come to recognize the importance of having their goals and aspirations acknowledged by their families in order to achieve personal growth. Through intergenerational learning, they realize that they must embrace change and support the girls' ability to make independent choices in order to flourish as individuals. The integrity displayed by each person is heavily influenced by the values instilled by their respective families.

It is natural for children to strive for personal growth and establish their own distinct identity. Jules, in particular, has already set her sights on making a difference in women's soccer, prioritizing her dreams over traditional pursuits like dating and shopping. Despite disapproval from

both her mother and Jesses's mother, Jules remains determined to pursue soccer without letting her family values impede her path. She consciously disregards her mother's wishes and focuses solely on her own aspirations.

This struggle strains Jules' relationship with her mother until the latter realizes that her daughter's strong determination cannot be dampened. In a change of heart, she begins to familiarize herself with soccer and support her daughter's chosen path.

Jesses family values are evident in her refusal to lie to her parents, as she couldn't bear the guilt or the impact it had on her family. Consequently, she sacrificed her passion for soccer to support her sister's wedding and maintain the trust of her family. As time went on, Jesses father recognized that he couldn't inhibit her dreams. Despite his concern for their cultural values being jeopardized, he started to endorse

her aspirations. He realized that times had changed and their culture now embraced sports, unlike when he was younger and faced racial taunting. Imposing beliefs on children can push them further away, hindering their self-realization and identity formation. Both households experience ongoing conflicts, but the girls diligently pursue their own goals every day because they know it is right for them. The clash of family values becomes apparent through the mothers' insistence that females should prioritize elegance and poise rather than chasing after soccer balls. Jesses traditional culture restricts females, limiting their personal choices and fulfillment as their lives are predetermined.Unlike Jules, Jess must consider her entire family, as their families are closely tied to the importance of passing on beliefs and values from one generation to the next. These traditions include embracing femininity and, perhaps most importantly, finding a suitable Indian husband in the future.

However, these traditional values are not significant to Jess, as they do not align with what she and her peers find important. Jess's generation differs greatly from the previous generation in terms of values and culture. While Jess's mother strongly holds onto her beliefs, she is not aware of what is best for herself personally. Unlike her husband, she has yet to realize the talent and determination she possesses that could take her far. This causes conflicts between mother and daughter, leading to a loss of respect on both sides. It is only when Jess and Jules are given a real opportunity to play soccer professionally that things start to change.

Even though Jess's mother fails to fully understand the raw talent her daughter possesses, Jess takes it upon herself to

pursue what she believes is best for her. As witnessed at the airport, Jess knows her own path. Accepting and providing guidance for someone's aspirations often leads to personal growth and achievements. Despite constant conflicts within their families, Jess and Jules maintain hope in what they are fighting for. They receive support not only from family members but also from individuals who possess different sets of values and can provide mentorship from a different perspective.Joy, as the coach, was dedicated to investing his time, effort, and patience into the girls. He recognized their talents and potential to succeed as inspirational female soccer players. Specifically, for Jess, he was determined to fight for her, disregarding her family's wishes. He saw beyond her family's strict Indian community and understood the importance of allowing her to participate in a sport traditionally seen as masculine. This decision risked their family's reputation but Joy approached Jess's parents, urging them to embrace the changing times and not let their daughter's skill go unnoticed. Similarly, Joy faced opposition from his father regarding his own career choices but ultimately understood what was best for himself. He believed Jess also possessed the power to choose her own path. Another player, Julep, had the added support of her understanding and flexible father who encouraged her passion for soccer. This support helped Julep's mother realize that soccer was meant for her daughter and if she rejected this truth, it would strain their relationships. These examples demonstrate that in order to aspire towards something, one not only needs personal belief but also the understanding and support of their closest family members. If Jess had been unable to assert

herself and defend her desires, her integrity would have been compromised. It would have been known that not only did her family disapprove of her chosen path, but they would also lose trust in her. However, due to Jess and Jules consistently staying connected to their families and maintaining ambitious goals, they ultimately found success and earned acceptance.
