Scout wanted to go visit Calpurnia at her house to see her neighborhood and how life was in a black community. At church she noticed lots of different things, such as the pastor being the only one with a hymnbook. When she asked why, she was told most of the congregation couldnat read. Scout also noticed that unlike the "proper" English she spoke at the Finches, when Calpurnia was at church she spoke like the rest of the blacks.

"That Calpurnia led a modest double life never dawned on me. The idea that she had a separate existence outside our household was a novel one, to say nothing of her having a command of two languages" (Lee 124). All this showed Scout didnit look down on blacks as if they were trash, but she still thought she was somewhat above them. The last third of the book Scout showed she didn t care what color people were. For example at the trial Jem, Scout, and Dill (their best friend) sat with the black people in the balcony and didnit care what people said.

She also was upset how someone could treat a person differently because he is black. After Mr. Arthur saved Jem

and Scout from Mr. Ewell Scout said, "Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.

Just standing on the Radley porch was enough" (Lee 279). Here is the story of how a child changed her perspective and learned to love. Through the examples of her father and other people who showed her kindness she learned all people are made the same and skin color makes no difference. I donit generally like books like this, but thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who doesnát have a problem with reading foul language or hearing about sexual innuendo type of things. All in all this a very good book.
