This article discusses the use of a Sales data cube on an MS OLAP server for data analysis of Fun School, a fictitious toy manufacturing company. The Sales cube comprises three Dimensions (Product, Customers, Time) and three Measures (Sale, Cost, Quantity). Having an understanding of OLAP structure is beneficial for multidimensional analysis and querying, even when information is presented in relational terms. The Microsoft SQL Server OLAP Services Architecture consists of server-side components that facilitate building cubes, such as the online analytical processing server. Additionally, the client includes important components like the PivotTable Service, which enables users to access multidimensional data. To connect to the OLAP Server on the server and browse the requested data, the PivotTable Service makes calls to the multidimensional data and then returns it to the client. In an n-dimensional grid, a cube defines a related set of dimensions where the information is at the intersection of dimensions
typically represented by a numeric value that describes the measure of the intersecting dimensions. Each point on the grid has a unique identification represented by a set of coordinates originating from the component dimensions. The cube serves as a fundamental metadata object in OLE DB for OLAP and ADO MD. A dimension is defined in cube structure as values for an individual axis in the cube that represent what the axis is trying to convey. Finally, every discrete value in a dimension is referred to as a member that indicates what is being evaluated.
Cells, which store information to be evaluated, are formed at the intersection point of two or more dimensions, with each being identified by a coordinate made up of a member from each dimension. Alongside other office utilities, Microsoft Office 2000 comes with a new set of controls known as the Office Web Components (OWC), which are beneficial in developing various data analysis and reporting solutions.
