RR #1What is Language
The initial section of the text introduced the components that comprise a language, which include channel, function, exchange, learning, arbitrariness, compositionality, imagination, and creativity.
In essence, the senses used to communicate are known as the channels of language and they may differ depending on the intended message. Exchange refers to the transmission of information in either a one-way or two-way manner, with human language mostly being two-way due to the need for a response. Learning involves acquiring communication skills through observation of sound or motion made by those around us. Language arbitrariness involves subtle distinctions between words and languages that can assist in determining whether they have shared origins or borrowed vocabulary, while compositionality involves constructing language structure base
...d on vowels, words and sentences.
The human language possesses two distinctive abilities: imagination and creativity. Imagination enables us to communicate about concepts that have not yet occurred, have already happened or are not factual, known as displaced reference. Meanwhile, creativity allows us to combine various language components to form new meanings and units. Additionally, the language consists of phonemes, morphemes, and phonasthemes, which are individual units that build up the language structure.
Rules of grammar control syntax, which refers to language units at various levels. Intonation and prosody- pitch and rhythm- convey emotions or attitudes. A language may have multiple dialects that differ based on region or culture. The mutual intelligibility of these dialects is measured by the percentage of shared words.
