A History of Racial Discrimination in the United States Essay Example
The entire world has been faced with the problem of discrimination. Lately, it has been one of the most debated topics in America. There is most likely some form of discrimination whether it is based on sexual orientation, race, or religious faith in every part of the world. Our own country has been struggling with this sensitive matter since its founding. Many may cry foul against the claim that equal rights and opportunities for minorities have improved. While we have come a long ways since the importation of slaves from Africa, we as a whole the nation must continue reading our history on race relations.
In the United States we no longer have slave masters. No man of any color is owned by a white or black slave owner. In the case of blacks they are no longer removed from their homeland and forc
...ed to leave behind their heritage, dress, customs, or family behind [Zinnd]. Such actions by any person against another were oppressive to ones equal rights or opportunities preventing the opportunity to flourish in any society. We have moved past such cruelty, yet still need to educate our current and future society of further advances.
Some people are misinformed while others are attempting actions which have not proven to advance equal rights or opportunities. A great example for debate is affirmative action policies. Affirmative action was created to expand the possibility for blacks to achieve a higher education. While more blacks have enrolled in college, educators are puzzled how the performance gap between black kids, especially those considered privileged, and others remains. In fact, “Black students from families wit
incomes above $70,000 a year score lower on the SAT than white students from families with incomes of less than $10,000 a year”[Ste01]. Obviously, an opportunity to achieve a higher education has been lost, only by reading the history of race relations can we determine what the true cause is.
Without reading the history of race relations we are unable to learn from our mistakes and move forward. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy when it comes to race relations as stated by Malcolm X, “The social philosophy of black nationalism only means that we have to get together and remove the evils, the vices, alcoholism, drug addiction, and other evils that are destroying the moral fiber of our community. We ourselves have to the lift level of our community, the stand or our community to a higher level... ".
