The 2010 report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) titled “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” Offers key recommendation that will transform Nursing Practice and training. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation worked with the Institute of Medicine to research on and creates recommendations on new ways to transform Nursing practice. The purpose of the initiative was to understand the changing needs and demands of the Nursing profession and create recommendations that would act as a blueprint to professionals in the field of Nursing. By following the report recommendations on education, leadership and Nursing practice, nursing professionals will manage to overcome existing limitations and meet the changing demands of the profession the provision of high-quality healthcare.
Nurses should not be limited by existing laws or rules but should practice according to the Nursing training and educational re
...quirements (Institute of Medicine and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2011). Laws and rules that govern the practice of Nurses vary in different states. Such laws which may be against the accepted standards as provided for in Nursing education and practice hinder the delivery of high-quality healthcare. Although the practice of nursing should be legal and in line with existing national laws, federal laws in different states create challenges for the effective practice of Nursing. The recommendation demands the healthcare providers and stakeholders to work with lawmakers in enacting laws that enhance the practice of nursing within the legal framework without limiting the mandate of nurses. Overcoming the barriers empowers nurses to use their training to improve the quality of health and to advance new innovative ways to increase efficiency within the health care system.
Application of the nurse practicing recommendation
in the report will help to improve the provision of Primary care by removing barriers that limit the accessibility of primary healthcare. The Congress through collaboration with health care providers will continuously create laws that make primary health care affordable and initiate measures to increase resources directed to health care. Collaboration among healthcare providers to ensure patients receives high-quality health care service. Nurses need to work as a team to advocate for the removal of regulatory measures that inhibit them from delivering primary health care. Working with stakeholders within the law is important to create new laws that empower nurses to practice without limitations that discourage the use of their education. Expanding the roles of health care providers will help increase the number of people accessing primary health care.
Need for better-educated nurses to deal with the nation’s healthcare challenges will lead to the development of an improved healthcare education system. The recommendation in the IOM report requires nurses to be competent that can only be attained using educational programs (Black & Chitty, 2014).The new systems that the government and stakeholders of health develop will continuously enable nurses to transition between different levels of training and practice seamlessly. A new healthcare system will ensure education in the practice of nursing is holistic and to meet specific needs of the system. Through continuous innovation, new education systems will solve the complex health issues in healthcare environments. Nurses should have the knowledge of technological advancement and emerging systems of information that aid heath care providers in the delivery of services. Such systems help nurses and other healthcare providers and will remain useful if nurses receive training on their
modes of functioning. It is also important that nurses gain more training on patient-centered care to improve the levels of service delivery and improve patient satisfaction levels in health care provision.
There is a need to create more leaders in nursing able to work with other professions to improve quality in the provision of health care services. Nurse leaders act independently and can make informed choices and policies to improve healthcare delivery. Nurses should, therefore, play an active role in the formulation and implementation of policies that relate to healthcare. Mentorship programs during training of nurses will help create leaders with the ability to make informed policies. The new nurse leaders, according to the report, should adopt a collaborative framework to improve the quality of health care delivery. Nurses will learn new emerging skills to be competent leaders that will positively transform the existing health care system in the future (Maccoby, Norman, Norman & Margolies, 2013). Such competency skills include; care delivery models, ethics, cost management, patient safety and cost management.it is through relevant training in leadership that stakeholders of health will perceive nurses as relevant and significant partners in the formulation of policies. Nurses will in future take a leadership role to increase the number of individuals training in nursing and reduce the turnover of nurses.
The IOM report gives recommendations that prepare nurses in a dynamic complex health care system to meet the changing the population. Nurses should receive more training to gain skills that will help them achieve health care goals as set in the profession. More nurses should undertake leadership training and higher education to utilize emerging opportunities and create new models in
nursing that will offer health care solutions to patients (Huston, 2013). They should use their experiences to create policies that will transform nursing education Nurse Leaders should promote evidence-based practices incorporated into the nursing training curriculum to reduce error that nurses may make in the provision of healthcare services. More research, therefore, remains relevant to inform policy making within the nursing profession. Through research new ways of dealing within and improving on challenges that face the existing systems will emerge.
