Directed by Chris Kennelly, Side by side is a documentary describing renovations in the film industry. This film elaborates how these changes have pushed the filmmaking industry in a different direction regarding capturing, editing, and manipulating images to produce a quality film. The movie captures views of the various filmmakers on the impact of digital on cinema. This paper gives a review of the documentary.
Interesting debates arise in this documentary about the aspect of movie making. Some filmmakers think that the renovations in the film industry had made the entire production process effective as shots collected in a day’s work could be edited instantly unlike previously when they had to wait until the entire production process was complete. This is evident from the argument by one of the filmmakers, Robert featured in the movie. He describes how th
e film production process has become efficient and effective with the advancement in technology (Dunham, 2015). However, other filmmakers are worried and argue that this instant version sacrifices precision. The director, Kennelly pays attention to the world beyond Hollywood and evaluates the impact of the technology on a low budget.
Digital technology has a great impact on film industry; especially the high capacity camera has helped in shooting in a high definition films. Shooting is easier in a digital setting as several cameras can run on the same shot without wasting time or retakes. For the editing process, digital effects are created and added to shot, and thus the filmmaker will not go through the painstaking process. Renovations in the film industry have also enhanced preservation of the film. One of the questions asked in that documentary is whethe
one can trust the hard drives to preserve the film, digital achieves are easy to backup and restore and thus considered effective.
To conclude, without technology it would be difficult to produce a volume of films as well as quality images, the filmmaker can shot, edit, and produce final work within the same day.
