The Texas community I am dedicated to in my nursing practice necessitates improved healthcare services. It is crucial to advocate for healthcare policy reforms to augment the quality of care for vulnerable individuals and those with special needs within the community.
There are multiple ways for a nurse to participate in initiatives, from systems and political perspectives, that aim to improve health outcomes for special needs and vulnerable populations. As a nurse, I am ready to apply research theory in practice within the Texas community and with individuals who are at a high risk or have special needs. My nursing background has allowed me to initiate social change by assessing the community's needs and developing interventions, including policy changes, to ensure success. It has also equipped me with the knowledge and insights needed to address the modern challenges that communities may encounter in the healthcare profession.
...Therefore, addressing the needs of special needs and vulnerable populations aligns well with the context instilled in me by my nursing background.
My approach to initiating social change from a systems perspective would involve ensuring that there is a sufficient number of individuals available to assist vulnerable members of the community. I would actively advocate for improved workforce planning, which would require more comprehensive data collection to assess the needs of vulnerable and in-need populations. Unfortunately, these individuals often do not receive adequate attention due to insufficient data about their specific needs (Institute of Medicine (U.S.), 2003). Consequently, they are unable to access the required level of care and support from healthcare professionals.
To address the issues, healthcare institutions should invest in improved information technologies for community needs assessment and planning. Adequate
staffing is also crucial to ensure treatment and promote awareness of health-seeking practices. Implementing system changes would enable nurses to have a more active role in decision-making and leadership, ultimately reducing high nurse turnover and enhancing job satisfaction and quality outcomes. Additionally, efforts should be made to overcome regulatory barriers that hinder nursing practice.
I would propose a policy initiative to promote the relaxation of restrictions on a nurse's scope of practice without reliance on or supervision by a physician. The current laws mandating nurses to constantly consult with physicians impede the delivery of care, especially for vulnerable individuals and those with special needs. Swift legislative action is necessary to bring about prompt change (Buppert, 2015). To address this issue, adjusting the regulatory system to empower nurses to act autonomously when necessary while ensuring the quality of their care in the absence of physicians is crucial. This would greatly enhance timely access to healthcare for special needs and vulnerable populations. By removing limitations on nurse practice, they can more readily take part in initiatives for social change.
The motivation of nurses will impact the quality of care they provide to the community. I aim for my legacy to be built on supporting change initiatives by motivating and reducing limitations that hinder nurses' efforts in initiating social change. Thus, I would contribute to social change by empowering more nurses to initiate it themselves.
