Personal Statement for Doctor of Philosophy Education Essay Example
I strongly believe that education is one of the strong pillars that can be used for development especially in Africa to eradicate poverty. Thus, my desire to my focus on childhood development as I hold the belief that a good foundation laid among young children can go an extra mile in changing not only the African continent but also the world in general. I believe that every child has a fundamental right of access to quality education that will pave way to be a successful and better person in future.
My intention to seek a Doctorate Degree in Education at Birmingham City University is motivated by my desire to conduct a detailed research on quality and monitoring systems that are used in the United Kingdom to ensure quality education. The United Kingdom is among countries that offers quality childhood education and care provisions
.... High quality education has been the symbol of Britain with many people believing that the nation is the best choice to build the perfect career. The United Kingdom provides quality education due to its exceptional curriculum that offers career focused courses that also prepares students for large international companies as well as a framework for starting own businesses. Research has further revealed that corporate employers agree that graduates from Britain are often the most successful employees. I will use my research to indulge deeper into issues such as curriculum and learning standards, family and community engagement, workforce quality and how these areas can be leveraged by policies for enhanced child development. At the end of my Doctorate Degree, I hope to identify some of the policies and practices that can be bought and
used to boast child development in my country Nigeria.
My desire to join Birmingham City University is motivated by the admirable reputation the University has especially in offering quality education in a friendly and professional environment. I am specifically attracted to the department of art facilities that will be vital while conducting my research on childhood education in regard to the United Kingdom education system. This is due to the fact that the university is involved in wide range of research and especially on education policy and practice from early years to higher education and lifelong learning. In addition, there is the availability of first rate staff, superb courses that focuses on practical skills and professional relevance at the university that sharpens an individual’s understanding of their careers. Further, the respectable reputation the university carries in producing highly qualified student equipped with skills that enhances their area of specialization as well students instilled with core values of excellence, integrity and fairness inspires me to join the university.
The last ten years of my career has seen me revolve around childhood education with special focus on nursery and primary levels. Hence, after the establishment of my own nursery and primary schools’, I have raised the ranks from working as a teacher to the position of head teacher. My experiences as a teacher in nursery, primary teacher, and head teacher have diversified my world into deeper understanding of some of the societal needs that are taken for granted and yet hugely affect the psychological aspect of a child’s performance in school. My teaching experience has enlightened my understanding of the manner in which ignorance, poverty and some societal beliefs
can limit a child’s potential and hence hinder their ability to explore individual potential.
My working experience with children has developed my leadership skills, organizational, time management as well as advanced my skills in use of initiatives. I have a deeper insight into a child’s development that varies in different age right from their development as toddlers to the learning environment characterized by natural curiosity. I have mastered the art of building a child’s self-esteem, which involves preparing and participating in children activities such as games. My experience has sharpened my understanding in knowing how to build a child’s confidence and trust and thus preparing them to face and overcome any trust and esteem issues that may arise in the future.
My long term goal is to revolve the education sector in Nigeria by working closely with the government as well as other stakeholders affiliated to the child welfare. I believe that by doing so, I will play a key role in laying down policies that act in favour of children’s education. Having pursued a Med Education Leadership with focus on pre and primary education in the United Kingdom, I am now focused at developing an education environment that is pertinent, precise and just. With my experience as a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, my definitive goal is to instruct other teachers, conduct research and make input to the advancement of childhood education in general. My ten year journey working through pre-primary to university level has offered me an opportunity to work with every grade and has therefore enabled me have a clear understanding of the factor affecting the education sector in Nigeria. Through research, I
believe I will present the recommendations that can be bought by the government to boast childhood education in Nigeria.
By pursuing the Doctorate degree in Education, I will not only achieve intellectual self-actualization but will also make a positive impact in my country Nigeria. I believe the degree will present greater opportunities for me thus enabling me make a greater impact in my career.
