It is well known in history that the human race has had a sincere interest in education and it has also been suggested that teaching is one of the oldest professions that is known to man. Children are born without much knowledge and they are unaware of many things that are well thought out as achievements and norms of a society they have been placed. Education is an avenue that will prepare individuals to reason for themselves and also helping them in making moral and ethical decisions. Each and every child is guaranteed an education regardless of race, origin, ethnicity, social economic status among other things. This essay mainly focuses on my personal philosophy on special education incorporating Nodding’s ethics of care and also Dewey’s.

Three different educational philosophies have been put forward to provide significant insight to the educators.

These include: Neo-Thomism, Idealism, and Existentialism.

  1. Neo-Thomism – This philosophy states that God exists and can be recognized through faith and reason. There are diverse levels in knowing God, the highest level being through revelation and the knowledge gained cannot conflict with revelation. This philosophy consists high esteems for ethics and moral values and that God established rigid moral laws that can be distinguished by reason (Webb, Metha, & Jordan, 2010).
  2. Idealism – It is the oldest philosophy known to man. Idealists have diverse views on some of the information. They however, do agree on two of the main elements. The first element is that the spirit is the most significant aspect of the human life and the second is that everything in the universe is importantly non-material. relatively an idea formed in the mind. Idealists also hold the view that the spirit of man has all wisdom in it and knowledge is an act of memory. Education is based on bringing this knowledge to the cognizant mind. The philosophy of Idealism claims that it is the educator’s accountability to inspire students to be receptive to ideas and be proud of talking about their cultural tradition (Van Nuland, 2001).

  • Existentialism – This philosophy places a great amount of emphasis on individuality. It highly tresses that the educator’s role is to facilitate opportunities for learning thus improving student success. Teaching students to becoming self-reliant while making informed decisions in life is one of basic roles of a teacher (Bailey, 2014).
  • My personal philosophy on special education is most like Nodding’s ethics of care as well as Dewey’s. They believe that the main purpose of education should be to produce caring, competent, loving, and lovable people. Students should learn the knowledge and skills that are necessary to help them to circumnavigate the world around them while at the same time caring for the children, elderly, animals, and the environment. They also believe that roles of an educator are to model ethical and moral behaviors because most often, students look up to them. Educators should always treat students as individuals who bring a unique set of needs and capabilities to the classroom (Noddings, 2010).

    Based on Nodding’s and Dewey’s philosophies on education, I believe that Students with learning disabilities can learn. Each student has his or her own strength and weaknesses. Educators must continue to lay emphasis on the strengths of each student and building on them, creating

    a stronger student and personality. Recognizing the weakness is at the principal of getting a student help with their learning disabilities (Noddings, 2010).

    Dewey believes that schools should not only be a place for getting strict educational knowledge but it is also a place that offers moral education in an effort to produce ethical, and prolific citizens. The purpose of the school should be one that purposes to offer a safe environment that inspires knowledge while at the same time fosters the development and growth of each individual (Dewey, 2013). I believe that students are individuals who bring an exclusive set of needs and skills to the classroom and they should be accountable for much of their own learning particularly as they grow and mature.

    According to Nodding (2010), school curriculum should consist of a few major key points. Firstly, a curriculum should permit students to practice and experience equality. I too believe that a curriculum should create a much safer and conducive environment in which students can come together for mutual benefits. It should avail learners with amble opportunities to foster their critical thinking while allowing them solves issues by applying their acquired knowledge. Finally, a curriculum should strengthen esteem for diversity as well as making learning appropriate to binding issues.I do believe that students with disabilities should be included in the general education classroom with realistic accommodations and modifications. They need a suitable classroom environment that allows their specific learning aptitudes. Special education tutorial rooms should comprise those students with moderate disabilities that necessitate them to have continuing life skills training encompassed into their curriculum. The practice of Nodding’s and Dewey’s philosophy will ensure a

    positive student-teacher relationship in the classroom and this will help the child to excel in school (Dewey, 2013).

    As I incorporate my personal philosophy on special education in the classroom, I want to help students to find their strengths and weaknesses. I want to help the children with disabilities overcome their disabilities and instead focus on their ability. I want them to feel a sense of community in their classroom and also in the school environment be it in a general education classroom or confined in a special education tutorial room. I also hope to foster success so that all children that pass through my classroom are confident to develop good self-esteem, learn from each other, and have a positive viewpoint for their future.

    I will also incorporate many teaching methods and variations such at the same time ensuring special accommodations for learning and social disabilities as well as for the talented children so as to reach all students. I believe in keeping an open mind to new methods and tools, and making a promise to never stop learning the art of teaching. Overall, I want to be able to use numerous teaching methods and tools so as to challenge students to the best of each of their varying learning styles and ability so that they can go on to be successful grownups.
    In conclusion, one of the most important elements that an educator needs so as to be successful is a teaching philosophy. Just like Dewey, I strongly believe that when there is a positive student-teacher relationship, the student is more capable to excel in school. Students should know they are loved and esteemed and it is

    upon the educator to treat each with respect, dignity, and fairness following Nodding’s ethics of care. Learning environment should be a place of shared responsibilities. While a student has an obligation to do everything in their capacity to learn, the teacher must do all it takes to offer guidance.
