People of diverse ages, races, and genders choose cosmetic surgery for several reasons. The primary objective is to enhance their physical appearance and elevate self-confidence. A wide range of surgeries are offered such as breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, liposuction, Botox injection, and other implants that can transform any desired aspect. With aging comes increased anxiety over the changes in one's appearance.
There are various ways to appear younger, including anti-aging creams, Pilates, and cosmetic procedures. Typically, older individuals opt for facial surgeries such as Botox injections, face-lifts, liposuction, and breast augmentations. Meanwhile, younger people tend to select breast augmentation, lip injections or implants, and rhinoplasty. It is important to acknowledge that cosmetic surgery can also have medical benefits.
Cosmetic surgeries serve the purpose of correcting physical birth defects, diseases or deformities. Breast
...implants are chosen by women who have undergone mastectomy due to breast cancer in order to restore their femininity and confidence. Facial reconstruction procedures can also be opted by individuals with burn scars or other disfigurements to enhance their appearance.
Individuals who are obese typically choose between two options: gastric bypass surgery or lap bands. Gastric bypass involves the elimination of a part of the stomach to control food intake and prevent excessive consumption of sweet foods. Meanwhile, a lap band is wrapped around the stomach to reduce its capacity for storing food.
The Lap Band procedure provides a restricted area, enabling only about 3 oz. of food intake. However, it is reversible unlike the permanent gastric bypass surgery. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reported that in 2006, around 11.5 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the US with surgical interventions accounting for almos
17% and non-surgical procedures comprising the remaining 83%.
Despite a 9% decrease in surgeries, there was a 1% increase in the overall number of cosmetic procedures between 2005 and 2006. This was due to a 3% rise in non-surgical interventions, which involve injecting substances like collagen or Botox with needles, while surgical procedures require cutting into the body using scalpels or other medical equipment and may require local or general anesthesia.
The website "Cosmetic Surgery, the Costs and Risks" (http://mywebspace.quinnipiac.edu/mnbordieri/index.html) states that liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty and breast reduction were the top five surgical cosmetic procedures in 2006 with 403,684 procedures, 383,886 procedures, 209,999 procedures, 172,457 procedures and 145,822 procedures respectively. Women underwent over 10.5 million surgeries which represented a total of 92% of all cosmetic surgeries performed that year.
There has been a change in the trend of cosmetic procedures where surgical procedures have decreased by 9% and non-surgical ones have increased by 4%. However, both types of procedures have seen a significant increase from 1997 to present day. Surgical procedures have gone up by 123%, while non-surgical ones have gone up by 749%. Men contribute to almost one million cosmetic procedures, which is equivalent to 8%. Non-surgical procedures have experienced an increase of 722%, whereas surgical ones saw a decline of 3%. The age group between 35 and 50 years old were the most common candidates for cosmetic surgeries with an average total of five surgeries per person.
Last year in America, cosmetic procedures amounted to around $12 billion with 3 million procedures performed, making up 47% of the total. Patients aged between 19-34 underwent 22% of these procedures while those aged between 51-64 accounted
for 25%. Those over the age of 65 only had a percentage of 5%, and those younger than 18 had less than a percentage of 2%. Furthermore, approximately racial and ethnic minorities made up about two percent more last year at around 22% out of all cosmetic procedure patients. Hispanics accounted for ten percent while African-Americans made up six percent. Asians represented five percent and other non-Caucasians one percent.
Commercial surgical procedures include a range of options, including weight loss and body fat reduction, as well as cosmetic enhancements like silicon lip injections, Botox for reducing wrinkles, breast augmentation, and plastic slips used to improve cheekbones, chins, and lips through facial implantation.
It is now easy and affordable to alter one's looks using modern technology. Both medical and aesthetic goals can be met by utilizing various surgeries, such as liposuction and tummy tucks, which eliminate excess body fat and skin. Additionally, rhinoplasty can address concerns about the appearance of the nose.
Cosmetic surgery is employed to enhance one's physical appearance and address medical conditions associated with the nose. Cosmetic surgery encompasses a wide range of procedures such as fat removal, cleavage enhancement, eyebrow lifting, wrinkle reduction, and tummy flattening. Though there are tales of cosmetic surgery gone wrong, there are also many instances of success. Despite apprehensions about the surgical process, numerous patients are willing to take the chance in hopes of improving their looks. To delve deeper into this subject matter, I interviewed a male and female.
During my interview, Taylor Duran, a 20-year-old who underwent breast enhancement and rhinoplasty surgeries, disclosed being previously an A cup and having a nose bump. Although she initially had apprehensions
about the surgeries, their completion left her feeling sore and regretful.
Despite initially experiencing swelling and pain, the woman in question was thrilled with the outcome of her cosmetic surgeries, which resulted in a smooth nose and perfect breasts. The interviewee, Jose Gomez, underwent a trio of procedures involving liposuction, lip enhancement, and Botox at age 34. He claimed to have been planning these surgeries for some time and stated that while he expected soreness during the recovery process, the results were well worth it.
I took before and after pictures of Taylor and Jose, then headed to a nearby park to conduct a survey. Seventeen individuals were asked to choose which they preferred. The majority of fifteen respondents chose the after picture as opposed to the before picture. Among those fifteen, seven believed that Taylor and Jose looked more confident in the after result. The remaining two preferred the after result due to its improved physical appearance. On the contrary, the two individuals who preferred the before picture claimed that Taylor and Jose looked more natural and were against their surgeries.
While cosmetic surgery generally produces satisfactory results, there are inherent risks involved in any surgical procedure, including cosmetic enhancement. It is therefore important to conduct thorough research and carefully assess all medical procedures.
Thoroughly researching the surgeon and procedure is essential before undergoing any surgery, as unlicensed or inexperienced surgeons have caused harm to both physical and mental health. Tragically, some individuals have lost their lives during or after major cosmetic surgeries. Furthermore, cosmetic procedures can be expensive.
Financial obstacles caused by the fluctuating expenses of financing surgery through different doctors and procedures can lead to
a cycle of dependence for numerous individuals.

Based on this data, it can be deduced that cosmetic surgery is both secure and economically viable, potentially enhancing an individual's self-esteem.
While not all cosmetic surgeries are meant for self-improvement, they are largely accepted by society and some can address medical issues. Gastric bypass and lap bands may result in weight loss, but they may not be the most advantageous choices. Although men are becoming more receptive to cosmetic surgery, there are risks - both medical and financial - associated with any type of surgical procedure. Consequently, conducting thorough research on all factors is vital before undergoing a cosmetic operation.
Before performing any surgery, it is important to consider the patient's financial responsibilities and the reputation and background of the surgeon. It is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the procedure. Source: Perry, A. W.
