The main character in the book thief is Liesel who is almost turning ten at the beginning of the novel and she shall is almost fifteen at the end of the story when her home is destroyed by a bomb and all her loved ones died. At the end the story she is an old woman and is when death collects her soul. She is the book thief. At the beginning of the novel, Liesel is seen without any words and she is not able to read. After she joined her foster family she was not able to relate with them well but Hans created the relationship with her and taught her how to read and write. Liesel loves the way words are able to fill her up but at some finds out that the words can turn to be an ugly something because the same words were used by the Germans to carry their horrific deeds. After earning to read and writing se was able to understand that the words are the same which took away her mother thus ruining the relationship she had with her because she used to send her letters without getting response from her.

At points she wishes she could be living without the words because they caused the death of her brother as well as there are the reasons why Max was hiding in the basement. She has used the same words to write her own novel and she was hoping that at some point she shall be able to find the right and good words to tell her story. Hans is the second character which we are going to discuss in this paper. He was the foster father for Liesel. His gentle and quiet nature is the one which made Liesel like him at the first meeting and he wins her over and she forgets about the death and Lisel loves him most than anybody else thus why they have the great bond between the two. Hans was a painter who did not like the acts of the Nazi party though he used to apply for membership so that he could protect his family from the killings which were being carried out. He was able to protect his family from the death the their families were facing several times and was most liked in the

Those hated him were very few and they thought and referred him as a Jew lover. Liesel loved him and she believed that the playing f the accordion was signifying a safety and thus why she felt more secure in the hands of Hans. He was a loving father and thus why he trained Liesel how to write and read after he send her to school and every child was laughing at her because she did not know how to read. They did their classes at midnight and afternoons so that he could assist her as her own child, their relationships became stronger because she gained the courage and became a lover of books and she could visit the library and each time she would steal a book. Like a father each time Liesel had nightmare Hans would sit by her side and in the absence of her mother Liesels main source was of security was Hans.

For instance, after Hans confirms that there is suspicion after the birthday party and the books were burnt he warned her that it was dangerous for to be Nazi and thus why every time she was writing a story she would go in the basement and thus why she was saved in bombing which killed her new family members. The last character is Rudy who was one of Liesel best friend. He was in love with her and he was insisting that he wanted to get a kiss from her all the time and he only received it after it was late because she was dead.
