What is Shaw And Mckay?
The work of Shaw and McKay is some of the most influential in sociology. Their research on the relationship between urban social conditions and delinquency in Chicago during the 1920s produced a new way of understanding urban life, which has been applied to cities around the world.Shaw and McKay’s research revealed a strong correlation between delinquency rates and certain aspects of urban life, such as population density, economic class, immigration status, family structure and cultural values. In particular, they found that higher crime rates were associated with high poverty levels, overcrowding, racial segregation and other features of city life that created spatial boundaries and limited opportunities for advancement. Their study provided evidence that delinquency was not simply caused by individual pathology or personal choice but was instead influenced by social environment.
