What is Person Centered Approach?
Person-Centered approach is a type of psychotherapeutic counseling which focuses on acceptance, understanding, and genuine care for the individual. It strives to help individuals achieve their goals by focusing on solutions rather than problems and emphasizing autonomy and self-determination. The person-centered approach was developed in the 1950s by American psychologist Carl Rogers. It has been applied to many different types of situations including mental health treatment, educational settings, career counseling, marriage and family therapy, substance abuse treatment, organizational development, crisis intervention and more. The main goal of Person Centered Approach is to help clients reach their fullest potential by enabling them to identify areas where they need further growth or change as well as develop deeper insight into their own thoughts and feelings. This process begins with building trust between client and therapist through unconditional positive regard (UPR), empathy, congruence (genuineness) ,and accurate reflection of the client’s verbal messages. UPR means that the therapist values who each individual is without judging them or trying to control or force any kind of change upon them; this creates an atmosphere which allows for open dialogue about personal issues without fear of criticism or judgement from either party involved in the relationship Once trust has been established within the therapeutic framework then it becomes possible for clients to explore their innermost thoughts and feelings free from external pressure from therapists along with discovering different ways in which they can manage challenging emotions such as anger, fear or sadness .Through this process clients are able to gain greater insight into themselves allowing for meaningful changes in behavior over time; these changes may involve exploring new perspectives on life events as well as developing problem solving skills designed specifically tailored towards tackling difficult situations Ultimately Person Centered Approach seeks to empower individuals so that they are better equipped at managing life’s complexities while also providing a safe space where every person feels valued regardless of what issues they bring forth during therapy sessions.
