What is Otto Von Bismarck?
Otto von Bismarck was a Prussian statesman who served as the first Chancellor of Germany from 1871 to 1890. He was born in Schnhausen, a small town in Prussia, on April 1st 1815. Bismarck had an illustrious career serving as minister-president of Prussia (186290) and then unifying Germany under Prussian leadership in 1871. He is widely regarded as the founder of modern Germany and the most influential statesman of his time.Bismarck’s foreign policy was characterized by his realpolitik approach which emphasized power over ideology or morality. He is credited with engineering three successful wars that secured German unification: the Second Schleswig War (1864), Austro-Prussian War (1866), and Franco-Prussian War (1870). Through these victories, he gained power for Prussia and united the German states into a powerful empire. After unification, he worked to ensure peace between France and Germany through alliances such as The League of Three Emperors (1873) and Dual Alliance with Austria-Hungary (1879). Bismarck was also known for pioneering social reforms that protected workers’ rights, established pensions, health care systems and accident insurance schemes; many of these reforms remain integral parts of modern European society today. His legacy remains controversial but he is universally admired for his political skill, administrative ability, charisma, energy and determination to see his vision through even when faced with opposition.
