What is Interpersonal Communication?
Interpersonal communication is a type of communication that involves the exchange of ideas, thoughts, feelings, and information between two or more people. It plays an important role in our daily lives as it helps us to build relationships with other people, develop trust and understanding among them, and create meaningful connections. Interpersonal communication can be both verbal (spoken) and non-verbal (written). Verbal interpersonal communication includes conversations between two or more people. This type of conversation allows individuals to express their opinions, make decisions together, express emotions verbally and resolve conflicts. Non-verbal interpersonal communication includes body language such as facial expressions or gestures which are used to convey meaning without words. Additionally, non-verbal cues can also include silence (which speaks louder than words), eye contact and physical touch (such as a handshake).Successful interpersonal communication requires good listening skills so that other people’s messages are understood accurately; effective speaking skills so that one’s own message is conveyed clearly; empathy which enables one to see things from another person’s perspective; self-awareness which allows one to understand their own emotions better; trustworthiness so that parties involved feel safe enough to communicate openly; respect for others; open-mindedness so that different views are accepted rather than judged harshly; assertiveness so that individual needs are taken into account while still being aware of the rights of others; positive thinking since negative language creates an unpleasant atmosphere during conversations.In conclusion, interpersonal communication plays an important role in our everyday lives by helping us form strong relationships with others through meaningful conversations filled with mutual understanding. A healthy balance between verbal and non-verbal techniques is necessary for successful interactions between two or more persons. By developing various soft skills such as active listening strategies and empathy we can become much better communicators overall.
