What is Path Goal Theory?
Path Goal Theory is a leadership theory developed by Robert House in 1971. The theory attempts to explain how leaders motivate their subordinates to complete tasks effectively by using different styles of leadership. This theory proposes that an effective leader will use different styles of leadership depending on the situation and the individual followers they are leading. The goal of Path Goal Theory is to help leaders support and guide their followers toward achieving organizational goals. The four basic styles of leadership proposed by Path Goal Theory are Directive, Supportive, Participative, and Achievement-Oriented Leadership. Directive Leadership involves providing clear expectations for subordinates and clearly outlining the paths they should take in order to achieve desired results. With Supportive Leadership, a leader provides emotional support for their subordinates and may also offer rewards or recognition for good performance. Participative Leadership encourages employees to take part in decision making processes within the organization. Finally, Achievement-Oriented Leadership sets challenging goals for employees and encourages them to strive for success in order to reach those goals. The Path Goal Theory also outlines specific behaviors that leaders can utilize when using these four different styles of leadership: setting objectives and goals, providing resources needed to achieve those objectives, assigning roles and responsibilities appropriately, providing recognition or rewards when appropriate, removing barriers that prevent achievement of objectives or goals, coaching/mentoring employees through difficult tasks or processes when necessary, setting achievable deadlines that encourage productivity without overloading employees with too much work at once; all while maintaining an open line of communication so that issues can be quickly addressed before they become larger problems down the road. Ultimately this theory seeks to provide a framework upon which effective leaders can build strong relationships with their subordinates in order create an environment where individuals feel empowered enough to reach their fullest potential while still working towards organizational goals – ultimately leading towards successful outcomes for both the business as well as its employees.
