What is Frequency?
ModulationFrequency modulation (FM) is a type of signal or waveform that has its frequency modulated, or changed in response to an input signal. FM enables the transfer of information over a wide range of frequencies without distortion and without interference with other signals. It is commonly used for radio broadcasting, television transmission, telephony, and wireless communication systems such as cell phones. FM has several advantages over other types of modulation including increased noise immunity, improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and reduced distortion because it does not rely on amplitude variations for data transmission. This makes FM highly suitable for use in noisy environments where amplitude modulation can become distorted by noise. Additionally, FM offers greater flexibility than AM because more than one station can be transmitted at the same time within a given bandwidth. In order to understand how frequency modulation works, it helps to first understand the concept of carrier waves. A carrier wave is any continuous oscillating electrical signal which carries information while remaining undetected by most receivers until they are decoded using specific techniques like demodulation. In FM transmissions, this carrier wave is modulated according to changes in the input signal’s frequency which produces sidebands that contain all of the audio information being sent from transmitter to receiver. The advantage here lies in the fact that since only frequencies above or below the original carrier wave need be decoded by receivers instead of amplitudes there is less chance for static noise or other forms of interference when sending messages across longer distances compared to AM methods where amplitudes must also be decoded accurately along with frequencies at both ends.. Overall, Frequency Modulation provides many benefits over other forms of communications such as Amplitude Modulation due to its better SNR and ability to send multiple stations through one bandwith among others .
