What is Ethnic Studies?

Ethnic studies is an interdisciplinary field of academic study that focuses on the history, culture, and politics of people whose ancestors were part of a particular ethnic group. The term ethnic studies was first used in the United States in 1968 when the San Francisco State College held its first Ethnic Studies Conference. Since then, it has become an increasingly popular subject at universities across the world. The main purpose of ethnic studies is to explore issues related to race, ethnicity, power dynamics, colonialism/post-colonialism, class privilege and oppression. It also aims to create space for dialogue between different ethnicities and cultures by exploring how these groups have interacted with each other throughout history. Furthermore, it encourages individuals from various backgrounds to gain a deeper understanding about their own identity and culture as well as others’. Ethnic studies provides students with an opportunity to analyze how race has been constructed over time and how this construction affects today’s society. In addition to uncovering historical injustices committed against specific groups or peoples due to their racial or cultural identity; ethnic studies allows one to examine current forms of racism within public policy (such as immigration laws) and education systems (e.g., underrepresentation). It further offers insights into areas such as literature, language usage patterns among minority populations, art produced by members of marginalized communities etc.; all topics which are not often found within mainstream educational curricula. Overall, through its holistic approach towards discussing topics related to race and ethnicity; ethnic studies can be beneficial for both students studying it in depth as well as those who simply take a course or two on the subject matter during their college years ultimately allowing them develop a broader understanding about our diverse global society.
