What is American With Disabilities Act?
The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law passed in 1990 to prevent discrimination against people with disabilities. The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications and access to state and local government’ programs and services. As such, it guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications. The ADA also ensures that people with disabilities have the same rights as everyone else to participate in everyday activities. This includes the right to receive equal access to goods and services offered by businesses open to the public; the right to purchase items from stores; the right to rent or purchase housing; and the right to attend places of entertainment such as movies or concerts. The ADA also requires employers and other entities that provide goods or services on behalf of a covered entity (such as an employer) not discriminate against qualified individuals because of their disability. This means that employers must make reasonable accommodations for employees who are disabled so they can perform their job duties effectively without suffering undue hardship. Additionally, service providers such as restaurants must provide accessible facilities for their patrons who are disabled. Finally, all new construction must meet certain accessibility standards set forth by the ADA in order for it qualify as being accessible under the act; this includes providing accessible parking spaces close to building entrances or exits; ramps instead of stairs at entrances or exits; wider doorways than normal doorways; elevators instead of stairs if more than one floor is present within a building; accessible bathrooms/restrooms within buildings; tactile warning strips along edges of staircases/stairs where possible etcetera.
