Section 6-6: National Security
Exercise 1
Step 1
1 of 3
The **Founding principles of the Constitution note the importance and necessity of military protecting the nation**. The government’s job is to protect the people by providing for the Common Defense in case of foreign invaders.
Step 2
2 of 3
The military forces defend the states to secure its blessings, and to secure its citizens. **Framers knew the power of the military** so they decided it should be under civil control of the president, and it partially depends on Congress as well. This allows the powerful military force to be in checks and balances with the system, assuring it will protect the people. President T. Roosevelt said that speaking softly and carrying a big stick will take you far. To conclude, the Framers knew the significance of the army, but the significance of the control over it as well.
Result
3 of 3
The framers of the Constitution addressed the military as a necessity of the States to prevail and preserve the nation.
Exercise 2
Step 1
1 of 2
**Conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and terrorist attacks** have all contributed to the government pumping vast amounts money into the military. Sometimes it was to act no a situation, like the war in Afghanistan. Other times it was out of the prevention against terrorism. Besides, the longest war in American history is the Afghanistan war, and that was very costly.
Step 2
2 of 2
Another reason for large spendings of the government is the **advancement in military technology.** For example, if a nation comes up with new weapons and technologies of a great power, and the States have not yet, it is necessary to catch up, which is costly. However, the United States acts in a preventive way and constantly invests in the military to avoid that case scenario.
Exercise 3
Step 1
1 of 2
A **potential benefit** can be a correct presumption of terrorist attacks thanks to efficient and rapid communication. The **DNI** confidentially connects intel from all intelligence agencies, which improves the security and safety of the government system and its people.
Step 2
2 of 2
**DNI** operates in a way that **invades space and privacy**, as most of their work involves **espionage** with a high level of secrecy, so it is hard to hold them accountable. This can be a trade-off for liberty and rights, as spying violates them. But then again, the insight they have can decide on the matters of life and death.
Exercise 4
Step 1
1 of 3
The **Department of Homeland Security** has a mission to defend the nation against possible threats, including terrorism, it was the primary reason for the establishment of DHS.
Step 2
2 of 3
**Terrorism** does not give the government a clear gauge on the threat. That is exactly what the terrorism power is and what makes it so dangerous. It primarily operates in a secret way that executes unexpected attacks at any given time. This is the reason why terrorism is hard to tackle and why it scares the public, which is one of the main goals of terrorism, intimidation.
Step 3
3 of 3
**DHS coordinates and gives directions to all of the agencies** in the field of domestic security that operate against terrorism. This includes fire departments, police departments, rescue units, and many more. It is a very responsible and daunting task to secure the nation against terrorism.
Exercise 5
Step 1
1 of 4
The United States is protected by the national military that consists of the land, air, and navy forces.
Step 2
2 of 4
The **land forces** are the oldest and fall under the most traditional military combat section. In contrast, the **air forces** are the latest added section to the military. They are the smallest as well. However, they play a vital role in the military system. The air forces provide support to the ground forces, execute attacks, encounter enemies, and control the skies with a high-efficiency level. AF defend bases the U.S. set up around the world and also provide missile attacks.
Step 3
3 of 4
Army serves people through the ground support and operations in different ways and areas, but all for the same goal. There is a big difference when comparing army size to the size of the AF. Furthermore, both are crucial for the safety of the nation and play a key role in their own area.
Step 4
4 of 4
The **army** provides ground support while the **air forces** control the skies. Air forces are the smallest section of the military and army is the largest.
