Section 1-4: The Basics of Democracy

Exercise 1
Step 1
1 of 1
In democracy, the government is responsible to the citizens and the citizens themselves elect their representatives. All are equal and no one is before the law or has any privileges. This form of system is in the works and is in alliance with the constitution of the United Stated, which advocates human rights. It represents not only the values of the Constitution, but also the values of most Americans.
Exercise 2
Step 1
1 of 2
**Majority rule** resembles that people choose their representatives. Political parties, and for example presidents, who get the most votes are placed in a powerful political position therefore *representing the majority of the people* who voted for them to represent them. This is all made possible by the belief that the majority is most likely to be right than wrong.
Step 2
2 of 2
It is based on a *system of equality* and political parties that have the consent of the people to govern. A system of equality where *one person has the same rights as everyone else* regardless of race, religion, or political viewpoint, a **minority right**. This provides more unity and freedom to the people because everyone who is legally eligible can participate.
Exercise 3
Step 1
1 of 3
**Citizenship** comes with *duties and responsibilities*, so the basis of a good citizen is to **fulfill one’s duties and responsibilities**, or as Theodore Roosevelt puts it, pulling your weight.
Step 2
2 of 3
If you just take a look at the side of being a good citizen, you have to **obey the law** in order for the government to function properly, therefore the state as a whole functions properly. When you have a lot of citizens following a government, that is *just*, by doing their citizen obligations and duties, you have a healthy functioning system and a better run state. That earns its citizens certain rights and privileges, so even though a good citizen contributes and pulls his weight, it is *for the greater good and big picture* that benefits everyone in the system.
Step 3
3 of 3
A good citizen, *on a personal level*, knows how to conduct him self and respects others and authority. A good citizen, *on a public level*, pays his taxes, obeys the law, contributes to the community, and participates in political elections. All in the cause of a better, stronger community.
Exercise 4
Step 1
1 of 2
Possible consequences of not requiring citizens to serve on a jury can be going against the sake of citizens. The purpose of jury is to give unbiased verdicts and resolutions to cases of individuals based on given evidence in court. The purpose of jury service is aimed at more fairness in trials. This is made possible by having peers, to judge a person, who are from a similar area and background, who can relate to each other based on similar experiences, and therefore can render a fairer and more impartial statements and verdict.
Result
2 of 2
If there was no jury service, individuals would than be judged directly, in the court of law, by professional judges and prosecutors who are not as liable to be *impartial* about the case and offer an *unbiased resolution*. Thus, definitely making the court proceedings *more rigorous and stern*.
Exercise 5
Step 1
1 of 2
The economic system of supply and demand is what makes the wheel of economics spin. It is a system with individual freedom, just as democracy is (democracy is a political system though). Those *who consume demand goods*, and then *producers supply those goods*. The prices of goods are based on the demand for those goods. If the demand for scarce resources is high, then prices will be correspondingly high. If the demand is for a good that is easy and cheap to produce, and has vast resources, then the price will be affordable. Almost everything that people consume is based on a system of supply and demand, it is the natural work and **foundation of an economy**. Supply and demand are independent of government and based on the market system. Because the government does not decide what goods will be produced, how many, and how expensive they will be.
Step 2
2 of 2
What controls supply and demand is the balance between the two. When there is too much of a good, prices will be lower so demand can be higher and equilibrium in supply and demand is meet. Vice-versa, when there is not enough of a good, prices will be higher until demand reaches and meets equilibrium. How these two situations are navigated, we can refer to as *unwritten rules* of supply and demand.
