Barbara Myerhoff initially intended to study elderly Chicanos in LA. However, she decided to conduct an ethnographic study on her own ethnicity for Number Our Days and focused on the aging Jewish population of Venice, California instead. Her reflexivity is evident as she identifies with the educated males of the group, such as her male correspondent Schmuel, rather than the females. Myerhoff is impacted by the emotional stories of the elderly she will eventually join. Similarly, in Cruikshank’s Life Lived Like a Story, reflexivity is crucial to interpreting and connecting various stories in a meaningful context.
Reflexivity is a crucial element of ethnography as it enables researchers to become immersed in their subject matter, becoming interactive reporters in the narratives. This approach allows for enhanced relevance in the gathered information and gives readers a sense of
...personal connection with the study. As a researcher, I believe implementing reflexivity would enhance the quality of my study by providing a more personal and comprehensive perspective. As such, I aim to avoid maintaining an objective distance from my sample population. Instead, I intend to fully engage and comment on my growth as a researcher while presenting a thorough and scientifically rigorous study.
Myerhoff initially planned to investigate senior Chicanos living in Los Angeles, but was persuaded by them to study her own culture instead. This led to the development of the anthropological method of "ethnography at home." Her work influenced Jewish ethnographic anthologies such as Judaism Viewed from within and from without, which encouraged both Jews and anthropologists to see Judaism as a legitimate subject of study and apply anthropological methods to its investigation.
