Realism in Europe is considered to be the beginning of the modern art. Philosophically, realism did embrace the progressive modernism aims, seeking truths that are new through the overturning and reexamination of traditional systems of beliefs and values. Realism mostly concerned itself with the way life was structured economically, socially, culturally and also politically. One of the inspiring arts both visually and intellectually is the Gross Clinic by Thomas Eakins.
Thomas was conceived in Philadelphia where he lived a hefty portion of his years. He was incredibly perceptive with his dad at work where he exhibited aptitude in context, exact line drawing and utilizing a network to lay out an exceptionally cautious configuration. ...as very expensive, and the letters to Philadelphia did reveal that he had a passion for realism whereby study of the figure was included. His first works in Europe included eleven oils and rowing scenes for a large group, (Friedlaender, 2014). Both his technique and subject drew attention. He placed himself in the art of painting in a skull that was behind Schmitt with his name being inscribed on that boat.
His painting, the Gross Clinic, is recognized among the greatest paintings in history. Thomas’s intention with the painting was to honor the scientific achievement of Philadelphia and to showcase the talents he had as an artist. He chose Dr. Samuel Gross to be his subject setting a scene in a surgical amphitheater in Jefferson medical college. The painting shows the doctor leading five physicians in a clinic doing an operation on a
patient’s left thigh. At the same time, the doctor is shown demonstrating the new procedure of surgery that he had developed to help in treating bone infections. The paintings medium was oils on canvas with dimensions of 8x6 feet.
Eakins worked in Europe for many years in which he placed himself in the art of the painting. He made academic trainings on the same. The Gross Clinic made him famous both in Europe and in America.
