Parenting and Children
How to raise children is not passed down genetically from parent to child, but the question remains on how and or what the appropriate manner is to rear a child. In psychology It Is understood that the cognitive mind learns through experience and how a person perceptually Interprets the environment (Band, D. (1967). In the earlier years children have a specific time In which there mind Is like a sponge and can absorb so much Information. Do different parenting styles affect this ability of absorbing information?
Many studies have shown that yes parents have a great influence on their children: this paper will give insight into the different styles of parenting, as well as how education in children is attained cognitively. Family influence is crucial in a child and the influence comes with many factors that contribute to the development of young children. Studies have shown that even the order of which you are born can determine your childhood experience (Macomb, E. E. (1992). Lets take a family of five, two parents and three sons each born one year apart, how can we explain how family hierarchy can affect development?

The two examples of the firstborn and the third child can create two different developmental environments for the middle child. This family hierarchy will create either discomfort or the middle child in the sense that he could be ignored; for example in a teenage setting where the older child is preparing to enter college and the younger child is entering high school, can leave the middle child ignored. The second scenario constitutes the middle child creating attention driven behaviors. These behaviors can be either positive or negative, in order to attain the desired recognition.
This Is Just one example on how family Influences the development of Infants and young children, however parenting Is the most prominent point In how a child develops. In 1960 Diana Banding conducted a study in which the end result was the development of four parenting styles. Dry. Birdman stated that these styles were Authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting (Banding, D. (1967). Dry. Banding made these conclusions through effective observation and research. It is important to evaluate each parenting style to better gain an understanding of being a parent.
The first style of parenting authoritarian; the child follows very strict and outlined rules. Punishment is the typical reinforce in authoritarian parenting. This style of parenting is more consistent with the personality of a parent who expects a lot from their children, however they do not respond to the children’s wants and needs. The typical reactions and structures set by the parents reflect the Idea that the parent Is always right and things need to be done, because the asked and without question. Trustees that are expected to be followed; however there is availability for the child to have a more democratic approach in dealing with the parent. Parents with this style of parenting respond to their kids and listen to needs and wants. In this particular parenting style the parents are authoritative, but it is not meant to be punitive. The children that grow up in this style are expected to be assertive themselves and responsible societal contributors. The children are raised in a stern household, however they are treated with more nurturing as well as supported with authoritative parenting.
The two other parenting styles fit a model that is more liberal than the previous two that are mentioned. Permissive Parenting is a more lenient approach to parenting. This style of parenting is also considered or known as indulgent renting. The focus of parents in style of parenting is more of a nurturing and communicative style. Parents tend to be the friend rather than the parent. The children that grow up in this household have a better chance of communicating their needs to their parents.
Lastly uninvolved parenting is style of parenting that does not require much demand on the children from the parents. These parents are detached form their children and could often neglect or even reject their children. These parents do not focus on extra curricular that comes with being a parent, but rather hey only provide the basic needs that a child requires and the parent remains detached in all other aspects. Knowing the different parenting styles outcomes can be determined by comparing the parenting style to the behaviors displayed by the child.
How do the variety parenting styles affect children in an education setting? Children that where raised in an authoritarian household tend to be more proficient are disciplined in school. They act appropriate in social settings and very structured themselves, however these children tend be less happy than most because they lack out going social interactions. Children also suffer from low self-esteem in an authoritarian household. Children that grew up in an authoritative household are very successful with their personal lives and are happier in general.
Even though they had strict upbringings, they were able to communicate their needs. They are raised with structure and are able to express their opinion; unlike the authoritarian household where they are told what to do without question. Those children who grew up in a permissive home are typically low performers who have altercations with authority. The attention that children from permissive homes pay in school is animal since their parents have never set strong boundaries. Children are less happy than most in this scenario.
Children who are raised in uninvolved household suffer the most direct consequences of that parenting style. These children are low functioning on all levels. There is a lack of control displayed by these children and grow up with very low self-esteem issues. Of all the parenting styles the authoritative styles is the most efficient in developing cognitive functioning. As for the rest there might be some successes, but typically they are not wise choices to raise a child. The impact of parental influence n the child is evident and should be treated with high regard.
