The Enola Gay shone in the sun as it flew over the clouds, on a mission to cause significant damage. Despite his hesitations, pilot Simon Campbell followed orders as America had been at war with Japan for almost four years. Even after Germany surrendered, Japan continued fighting, making it crucial to take drastic measures to reestablish worldwide peace.

When I was eleven years old, my family planned to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The consequences of this act would include death, separation of families, and long-term environmental damage. Despite being the youngest member of the family, my older brother Sangi (who was fourteen) protected me from bullies at school due to my small size. At that time though, I had no knowledge of the imminent danger and just played with my card tower.

Although I called out fo

r Sangi to come see what was happening, there was no response, so I took matters into my own hands and headed to the kitchen. However, upon opening the pantry doors, I discovered empty shelves.

While watching my mother struggle with shopping, I realized it was a recurring problem. Suddenly, I heard a loud and disruptive noise that sounded like an explosion. This caught my attention and made me rush towards our shelter. However, before we could reach safety, there was a bright light and a massive sound.

After experiencing a sudden whiteout, I discovered myself in the midst of a bustling crowd. Each individual seemed to be engrossed in their own tasks like an ant colony. The liveliness and rapid activity were overwhelming, causing me to shut my eyes once more. Upon opening them again soon after, it appeared as

though no time had passed.

A radiation-suited man, identified as Dr. Matthews, had replaced the departed ants. He stated he was an American doctor dispatched to assist in the aftermath of a nuclear blast following Japan's surrender. Despite learning this new information, I didn't fully absorb the details.

Before I was hospitalized, the term "catastrophic" seemed unreal to me. However, it became a harsh reality as I found myself lying in bed with my safe environment shattered. Reports indicated that I had gone without food for three days, leaving me alarmingly weak. Despite a few cuts and bruises, I was fortunate to have escaped any serious injuries.

The situation seemed illogical; however, I eagerly consumed the food provided to me. While I briefly thought about my loved ones, a tremendous desire to rest washed over me. Upon awakening from my deep slumber for the third time, I was significantly revitalized and felt an urge to take action.

Upon rising, I staggered across the chilly plastic surface to the hallway. Along the way, I glimpsed outside through a window. The once vibrant and lively landscape lay in ruins, emitting smoke. Witnessing the destruction of my home, birthplace, and sole familiarity brought me to a crying fit. The thought of never being able to reconstruct the same abode or recapture any memories was excruciating.

After the explosion, I realized that my family had died as the impact was too intense for anyone to survive. Although I was confused about my own survival, I composed myself and committed to verifying the destiny of my beloved ones.

Traversing dismal passageways with colorless walls and drab entryways, I eventually came to an

anomalous portal. Upon entering, I found myself in a vastly spacious common area teeming with an aimless crowd numbering in the thousands, all of whom bore severe burn marks and disfigurations, emitting an overwhelming stench.

As I observed the survivors, I recognized them as the few who had survived while most did not. Despite feeling emotional and wanting to cry, I held back my tears. Close by, next to the room's entrance was a desk with two men working on computers. I walked up to one of them and asked about the current circumstances.

According to him, as a consequence of radiation contamination, the survivors are dependent on this location for both food and shelter. After introducing myself and seeking updates about my family, he vigorously typed for a few moments before hesitating to speak. Although he remained silent, I comprehended my solitary status. Contemplating the ramifications of my family's demise, I sat down on an unoccupied makeshift bed.

Although my brother's body was never found, implying his potential survival, the man working on the computer showed empathy and offered consolation. His words brought some comfort despite our awareness of my brother's passing. However, as I was nearly fully recovered, the man apologized for any inconvenience and requested that I leave. He suggested spending the night at Yasu Shrine instead. Accepting his advice without argument, I got up and departed.

As I dodged the craters caused by falling debris during my walk, I couldn't help but feel like the world was out to get me. Lost in thought, time slipped away from me and before I knew it, darkness had fallen. Frantically seeking refuge, Yasu Shrine in

Gion became my temporary home for the night. Unfortunately, everyone there suffered from burns and spent the night crying out for water.

Observing the miserable expressions of those around me, I recognized a familiar face - my brother. The elation I experienced upon our reunion cannot be put into words. With him beside me, I felt assured that everything would work out, even in seemingly impossible circumstances. Sangi has always been there for me and together we can overcome any obstacle.

After four years, I finished my O Level exams and shared with a friend how relieved I felt. My life was great as Sangi and I lived in Leeds with the Robert family. But on my way home from school, thoughts of the devastating impact of the Hiroshima bomb burdened me, leading me to a gloomy path no child should endure. Fortunately, my brother rescued me from this hopelessness.

After careful consideration, I have realized that there are many things in my life that I am grateful for.
