It was around my freshman year of high school when I decided I wanted to teach first grade. I’ve played volleyball for many years, and have spent a lot of time with my coaches children. One of those being a little girl named Kinleigh, the child who sparked a soft spot in my heart and helped me come to the realization that teaching was what I was being called to do. Seeing her eyes light up when I walk into the room, as she sprints my way to jump into my arms and wrap her legs around me, to this day instantly makes even the worst of days better.
When you tell someone you want to be a first grade teacher, most of the time you do not receive a positive response. In fact, it’s usually something along the lines of “Good luc
...k with that”, or “You want to wipe noses all day?”, and believe it or not, that is the opposite of what comes to my mind when I think of my career choice. I have always absolutely adored children, with their genuine little hearts and innocent minds. A child looks at situations with a much different perspective than an adult would. Children view everybody as equal, only see the good in the world, and they sure do have the right answers to most of our questions. Not only will the children be learning, but I will be learning as well. I couldn’t possibly begin to think of a better job than getting to teach children while learning things myself along the way.
As a teacher, you get the opportunity to help mold the lives of
the children, even in the smallest of ways. You are given a handful of students and not only do you get to teach them the basics of education using a variety of different creative techniques, but you get to broaden their minds, and introduce them to new ways of thinking. I aspire to walk out of the classroom every day feeling as if I made a difference in at least one life, whether that be helping a kid comprehend a lesson he doesn’t understand, or bringing a smile to a little girls face after a rough day. Teachers make a difference in the world, and the best part about it, is that you get to be up front noticing the visible changes being made. There has been a number of incredible teachers that have positively affected my life, and becoming a teacher myself will give me the chance to pay it forward and make a difference in the lives of others. I strive to impart lessons that will help shape the next generation. Children are the future, and knowing that I will one day get the chance to impact a little girl or boys life forever makes me so excited to begin my journey.
