the focus on the importance of English, we must recognize the significant economic and diplomatic relationships our country has developed with other French-speaking nations. The recent Sommet de la Francophonie in Moncton, New Brunswick, highlights the significance of this language. Personally, I have been studying Spanish to assist me in the meetings I attend as Secretary of State for Latin America.

After studying the language for over two years and having numerous lessons, my teacher has continuously assured me that fluency is just one more lesson away. However, the importance of acquiring proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese cannot be underestimated for those involved in business and government who aim to enhance trade connections in the Americas. As economic integration progresses in the hemisphere, knowing other languages spoken in the region becomes an incredibly valuable skill.
