A mother takes her child to the grocery store and is aware that that her child has stolen a box of cookies. In this report I will explain how the five components of wise judgments apply and make a decision based on the five components with explanation of how I believe these components to interrelate to the chosen scenario. The five components of wise judgment are factual knowledge about matters of life, Procedural knowledge, Lifespan contextualism, Recognition and management of uncertainty, and Relativism regarding solutions.

I will describe the way each of these relates to a mother knowing that her 7 year old child stole cookies from the grocery store. The first of the five components is factual knowledge about matter of life. In this component of wis

e judgment you analyze and access the knowledge of social norms, interpersonal relations and human nature. In this scenario the mother should access the situation as to why the child would feel it was okay to steal the cookies. This would be a prime opportunity to teach this child the difference between right and wrong.

The mother should show the child what is accepted by society and what is not. She can use this opportunity to show her child how stealing effects the whole community even when no one saw you steal. When someone steals, the retailer has to make up for the money they would have made on that product they no longer have and are no longer able to sell. This causes prices to increase. When the child becomes older and is not properly show that they cannot take things that d

not belong to them, they will gain a bad habit and continue this pattern through adult hood.

It is in our human nature to be impulsive and want things that do not belong to us but we also need to be aware of the effects our actions have on other around us and how our actions can directly effects someone we might not even know. The next of the five components is Procedural knowledge. Procedural knowledge is based on the way you deal with life and the situations that arise in it. The way to deal with life’s problems, methods of handling conflict, weighing your options and goals and offering advice.

In this scenario the mother should explain to the child that stealing is wrong and how it affects the child personally and their immediate family as well as other in their community. She should sit down with her child and explain the options he/ she could take in the situation and weigh the pros and cons. She needs to also offer the advice to the child and explain why she feels it is important to follow the advice she is giving to the child. Show or explain examples of different consequences of the choices that are at hand and how the consequences could be either positive or negative.

According to our psychology chapter 4 reading, titled wisdom, Lifespan contextualism is when you have “Knowledge about the different roles and contexts of life (e. g. , family, friends, work, recreation) and how these may change over the life span. In this situation the mother could explain that in this childs life he

will encounter friends and family that will not always look out for the best interest of the child or will encourage the child to take negative courses of actions in his or her life or make negative choices.

She should also explain that although friends and family will come and go throughout the child’s life there will be good encouraging people that the child should try to learn from and gain knowledge from. In the work place your coworker should be able to trust you and know they are safe and their property is safe around you and someone that steals is not a trustworthy person. In relationships with a significant other requires trust. If a person feels the right to be sneaky and steal they may feel the right to be sneaky and cheat in the relationship or to lie or even steal from their significant other.

It is very important to teach our children the concept of integrity and to do the right thing even when no one is looking. Recognition and management of uncertainty is recognizing that the human ability is limited and that the future cannot be fully realized. Life is unpredictable and cannot be planned in advance and that there may be no perfect situation. In this situation the child needs to be taught that all people make mistakes and that no one is perfect. The theft of the cookie should be a learning experience for this child to learn some very good life lessons that can build him or her into a responsible adult.

The mother can use this tactic to show her child that the

world is full of imperfect people. This child could learn that people don’t always make the “right” decision and it very important you do after the decision especially when the decision that was made was a bad decision. To correct your mistakes are a very difficult thing to do for many people. Many people do not want to face the mistakes they have made and they run from them or ignore them. This mother can teach her child how to accept the mistake and then correct it to the best of their ability.

The last component of a wise decision is Relativism regarding solutions. In this concept the child could learn that in different cultures thieves are not accepted and even in some cultures the penalty is death. This child should understand that many cultures differ from another and that it may be accepted or overlooked in his/ her culture but in other parts of the world it is taken very seriously. The decision I have made after evaluating this scenario is that I as a mother would not allow my child to think that stealing something is no big deal.

I would take the appropriate actions to teach my child the right way to handle the situations and how to fix the mistake or to prevent future mistakes. I personally would take my child back down to the store and have them admit their mistakes and apologize for their mistake. They would have to pay for the item and work to earn the money to pay for the cookies. I would take this opportunity to teach my child this valuable life lesson.

I would also support my child and let him or her know that they are not alone in this decision and that I will be there to support my child through good and bad.
