Sharper than any two-edge sword: the word of God in the Synoptic Gospels by Barbara E Bowe contains the importance of understanding God’s teaching for Christians. The three synoptic gospels; Matthew, Mark and Luke shares the same viewpoint when it comes to the narration of Jesus’ story. The word of God is Sharper than any two-edged sword because it is effective in letting other people know that God is alive and His words are penetrating the soul and spirit, joints and marrows and it enables one to reflect and discern through heart’s thoughts. The word of God is powerful.
It is also dynamic since the good news is proclaimed with full enthusiasm. Divine are the words of God because it was first spoken by Jesus who faced his death and resurrection for the salvatio
...n of sins. God’s word also varies because it is spoken by many people using their faulty human tongue. There are instances that the word of God speaks metaphorically because he speaks in spirit. God has no specific or particular culture of the world (Bowe 353). God is a self revealing God for his people because he is finite in nature while our tongue is infinite.
Another point of view cited by Bowe in her article is the promise of God’s word for our future. It is apparent that the good news will lead us to eternal life. From here, people just have to receive and welcome God’s words in their lives. The gospel of Mark (Mark 4:39) explains that these words are penetrated to the core of who we are and it can transform everything. The word of God casts away every doubt
and fears instill in people’s mind the same way that the angel appeared before Mary and announces her conception of the child Jesus.
The promise of God was told to her by an Angel who guaranteed her that nothing will harm her because it is a favor from God. Having said all those things, Mary did not hesitate to give her yes to God immediately. Cooperation with the good news and God’s word enables people to be more united with God and gives the security that nothing will happen as long as He is with us. The continuity of one’s identity is also reflected on God’s words. An accurate example of this the way Jesus explained how one cannot live by bread alone.
There is a need to grasp God’s word because life is based on his teachings. Identities are formed not only by the resources that surround them like food, shelter and clothing. The word of God sustains life for it enlightens the path and help people avoid temptation and sin. When one knew about the word of God, it is not enough to just stare or listen to it. People are also expected to act on it and make the word of God the guide in their lives. Listening and obedience is part of the process in accepting Gods word.
One must listen with full comprehension and obey God’s word without inhibitions. Out of these two, people can be healed and reach salvation. The Holy Eucharist draws people closer to God. During the part where people utter the words “Lord I am not worthy to rceive you, but only say the word and I shall be
healed”, it is guaranteed that people are submitting their lives to God and believing that their faith will heal every burden and sickness that they have. God’s word also forgives event the deepest sin caused by the demon.
The evil possessed individual and the sick beings can be cured through God’s forgiving words. Lastly, god’s word is a clear instruction that every Christian must follow. The path of life encourages every servant of God to live through God’s word and proclaim the good news to everyone. God’s word must be shared and promulgated so that everyone will be save from sins. The best way to prove that God’s word is sharper that any two-edged sword is by instructing people how to follow the ways of the Lord.
