Various forms of media, such as music videos, movies, reality shows, beer ads, online porn, video games with prostitutes, and sexy doctor shows widely depict sexual content. Research indicates that increased exposure to sexual content can lead children to engage in sexual activities at an earlier age. Adolescents rely heavily on the media for information about sex, dating, and sexual health. Health experts argue that the media can effectively educate individuals about contraception methods and sexually transmitted diseases. However, in 2005 only 15% of TV shows featuring explicit sexual content addressed associated risks and responsibilities out of a total of 68%. Not just movies and television but also music, video games, and the Internet contain sexually explicit and degrading messages which have the potential to influence young people's attitudes towards sex.
The research project 'Young People, Media and
...Personal Relationships' was conducted by the authors from June 2001 to July 2003. Funding for this project was provided by various organizations, including the Advertising Standards Authority, the British Board of Film Classification, the BBC, the Broadcasting Standards Commission, and the Independent Television Commission.
In order to conduct a qualitative study, this project involved conducting interviews and fieldwork with children and parents, as well as examining existing research literature. Additionally, a questionnaire survey was administered. To provide a more thorough analysis of the qualitative study, an accompanying book titled "Young People, Sex and the Media" by David Buckingham and Sara Bragg (Palgrave Macmillan, 2003) will also be released.
