The Sathyamurthy Sagar reservoir in Poondi had to release surplus water as it reached just a foot below full capacity. The heavy downpour caused an inflow of about 3,700 cusecs from surrounding catchment areas. Additionally, the dam received 570 cusecs from the Krishna Drinking Water Supply channel. To manage the excess water, both Tiruvallur District Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal and Government Chief Whip P.M. Narasimhan opened the shutters of the link canal and allowed 500 cusecs to flow into the Red Hills reservoir. Furthermore, they also opened the shutters of the Baby canal to let 90 cusecs enter the Cholavaram reservoir.
The Sathyamurthy Sagar shutters are being opened after approximately nine years, releasing all the rainwater received in the dam into the Kosasthalaiyar. Despite the meager outflow compared to the Kosasthalaiyar's capacity of 1.
...20 lakh cusecs, there is no need for panic according to the district administration. The Kosasthalaiyar drains floodwater into the Bay of Bengal after passing through Thamaraipakkam, Minjur, Naapalayam, and Ennore. The current storage of the dam is 2,755 mcft, with a full capacity of 3,231 mcft. Over a 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, it received 6 cm of rainwater. Additionally, surplus water from the Chembarambakkam tank, totaling 1,600 cusecs, has been fully released. The Chembarambakkam tank currently holds 2,908 mcft of water, with a full capacity of 3,645 mcft. Water release will be adjusted or halted based on future inflow.
The Adyar river will receive excess water from the lake through Tiruneermalai, Anakaputhur, and Nandambakkam. Some huts along the Adyar river have already been submerged by this excess water. M.P. Vijayakumar, Chennai Corporation Commissioner,
has announced that the affected people will be relocated to Corporation schools and provided with food and care. The heavy rain in Chennai and its suburbs has resulted in flooded roads and homes. Nungambakkam had 9.6 cm of rainfall while Meenambakkam received 7 cm between Tuesday 8:30 a.m. and Wednesday 8:30 p.m., leading to submerged roads and disrupted traffic flow. Even pedestrian subways on Anna Salai, a major road, were flooded.
