Inferiority complex is a term used to describe a sense of inferiority an individual feels about oneself towards other people or even people in a whole nation who dismiss their own culture as inferior to the cultures of other countries. Such feelings can arise from an imagined or actual inferiority, therefore there is no such rule that people with this complex are actually inferior. The issue is often subconscious, and is thought to drive affected individuals to overreact, resulting either in spectacular achievements, extreme antisocial behavior, or both.
However, everyone suffers from a normal feeling of inferiority, which, unlike an inferiority complex, is a less advanced state of discouragement, an incentive for achievement. This contrast between the foolish and excessively confident and the modest, but knowledgeable scholars results from the sheer ignorance of the first.
Moreover, it has become a very common practice among journalists, writers, and other contemporary Romanian history analists to refer to a inferiority complex when describing the behaviour of earlier generations of Romanians. This syndrome implie
the belief that one's own country occupies a subordinate cultural place among others, intellectual standards are low, and progress does not occur here, but rather elsewhere.
As a consequence, a person holding this belief is inclined to devalue their own country's cultural, academic, and artistic life, and to worship the seemingly superior country. As the inferiority complex is a manifestation of the human personality, it is a complex and intricate issue, implying a wide range of different manifestations and, therefore, multiple acceptations.
