Answer these questions as it relates to the school you are working or want to be working in or your community. Do children with disabilities attend the neighborhood recreation programs and schools they would attend if they did not have disabilities? (2pts) The children with disabilities in my district do not attend their neighborhood schools. There are certain schools designated within the district that enroll children with disabilities. If the child has a sibling (without a disability), parents can choose to send that child to their neighborhood school or to the same school the student with the disabilities is attending. The only recreation program that children with disabilities attend in my district is through the YWCA, even though there is a district middle school that as a recreation facility attached to it.
Do children with disabilities receive the supports they need to be successful (instructi
...onal accommodations, assistive technology, augmentative communication, adult and peer assistance)? (2pts) For the most part, children with disabilities do receive the instructional, assistive and augmentative communication needed for the student to be successful. However, in regards to adult/peer assistance there is a directive to reduce the number of paraprofessionals in the district. Currently there are some severe needs students, that require a one-on-one paraprofessional, and this requirement is stated in the student’s IEP, but to date the student does not have a paraprofessional at all.
Do staff and volunteers receive the training and supports necessary to successfully teach and/or engage all children in their activities or classrooms (planning time, consultation and collaboration with professionals)? (2pts)
There are no volunteers currently for children with disabilities. I do not believ
that the staff receives adequate training. I feel that the staff is not well versed with special Ed law or DESE mandates (it’s really scary). I also think that the SPED staff does not have In the film, Keith Jones said, “You can’t box people up in a room, 20 by 20, eight hours a day, then ship them off into the world and expect them to have social interaction skills.” Why do adults often separate children with disabilities? What do you think young people learn—or don’t learn—by being separated? (2 pts)
I think adults often separate children with disabilities, because they assume that children with disabilities are incapable of being educated. I think these adults are misinformed and they assume that because a person is disabled physically, they are impaired mentally as well. When young people are separated from children with disabilities, they are misinformed just as the adults are misinformed. Young people will not be tolerant of children with disabilities or other young people that look different from them. I think that nondisabled students who have had opportunities to interact with students with disabilities hold more positive and accepting attitudes toward students with disabilities, than do students who have not had such opportunities. Such interactions can also reduce nondisabled students' fear of students with severe disabilities and promote understanding and acceptance.
Did this film change the way you think about people with disabilities? If so, how? (2pts)Â This film really helped me further understand that people with disabilities are entitled to and deserve the same rights as everyone else. The struggle that the disabled person fights for and is entitled to is
reminiscent of the same struggle African-Americans fought for (and is still fighting for), during the civil rights movement….to be treat equally, and be given the same opportunities as any other citizen.
