The film centers around Rick Dadier, a married war veteran who becomes a teacher at North Manual High School. Despite being pregnant, Rick's wife Anne supports him in his new job. As a novice teacher at an all-boys school, he soon discovers the reality behind the rumors about student behavior.

At North Manual High School, new teacher Rick and his fellow newcomers rely on the guidance of more experienced colleagues to navigate challenging situations with their uncooperative students. Despite this support, Rick endeavors to establish discipline in his classroom but faces violent reactions from both the students and staff.

Rick Dadier has a belief that

there is one student in the school who is against him. This student is Gregory Miller and he provocatively uses his race as a means to provoke others. Since Rick started teaching this unruly group of students, his wife has been receiving letters that falsely accuse him of cheating with female colleagues at the school.

In spite of his anger, the protagonist attended school and confronted Gregory Miller who neither confirmed nor denied the accusation; instead, he aggravated the argument, exacerbating the situation. On the whole, this movie was commendable due to its shocking and startling nature, earning it three Oscar nominations in 1956.
