Effect of Social Media on Children Academic Performance Essay Example
In this 21st century, distinct social media sites, for instance, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn among others have significant effects on the children’s academic performance. The engagement of children in various media sites may have positive, as well as negative impacts on their academic performance levels. However, the adverse effects associated with the use social media amid the students outweigh the positive ones. For instance, according to the research conducted by Issa, Isaias and Kommers (136), the students’ participation in several social media platforms, for example, Facebook for an approximate of 5 to 10 hours extremely hinders the children’s academic achievement.
Various types of social media platforms result significantly in horrible harm than good on the children’s academic performance since while studying they usually get fascinated to the sites to kill their monotony and thus divert their focus from academics (Burgess, Stermer an

Regardless of the few benefits associated with the children’s engagement in social media platforms such as rich sources of educational information, their unlimited use contribute heavily to reduced writing and readings skills, late submission of the given class assignments, and fewer academic behaviors, and thus resulting in poor academic performance in schools.
Excessive use of social media, for example, Facebook, Twitter, and playing video games via the internet among others awfully impairs the children’s academic performance. Children who excessively engage themselves in these distinct forms of social media usually have fewer academic behaviors, for instance, finishing their homework besides attending classes, reduced academic confidence, and other terrible predicaments that affect their studies.
According to Burgess, Stermer and Burgess (377), video game playing, which is one of the key activities that a significant figure of
children engages themselves in over the Internet impacts their academic performance. For example, their results apparently show that “video game playing was significantly negatively correlated with college GPA” (Burgess, Stermer and Burgess 383). These authors meticulously assert that different types of media such as use computers along with video game playing have a close association with increased performance levels in the learning institutions. This is because excess of computers, as well as video game playing often requires one’s great focus attention. Thus, this forces several students to lose concentration in their studies. Besides, the Burgess, Stermer and Burgess’s (378) results portray that there exist a negative relation amid the time children spend in video game playing and their fundamental academic performance levels.
Besides, unlimited use of social media amid the children prevents them from focusing heavily on their writing, as well as reading skills. It also prevents them from recalling the most critical knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. For example, according to the research conducted by Issa, Isaias and Kommers (136), a significant figure of students asserted that social networking, “Prevents me from concentrating on writing and reading skills.” Therefore, this enormously contributes to poor grades and the performance levels in schools.
Students also experience reduced studying morale and research competencies. This is because a good number of them depend greatly on the available information in distinct types of media platforms. For example, a significant figure of children using various social media sites and excessive use of internet often use slang words while chatting and sending other messages that they wish to pass to their friends. Students also become reliant on the computers’ grammar along
with their spelling check features (Issa, Isaias and Kommers 138). Also, students immensely lose their command over the appropriate language, which they have to use in writing their examinations on, as well as correct presentations at their final exams, and consequently achieving poor academic performance at the end.
Also, there is an important relationship between late submission of the class assignments and time spent among students on the use of various social networking platforms. For instance, social network engagement has a horrible impact on students’ academic performance levels, especially by using mobile technologies since they argument frequency, as well as the flexibility of visits to the different types of social media sites. According to Anderson (89), the ideal time for submitting classroom assignments is profoundly affected because of the excess use of social media, for instance, Twitter, and Facebook among others. Anderson (89) asserts that “Using technology for social purposes may have a negative impact on the academic performance of a student.”
Also, the psychological dependence and awful academic impairment are significant ensuing effects associated with the excess use of internet together with social media platforms. Thus, several social media sites, as well as the internet usually carry off time of the students and contribute substantially to procrastination of their academic performance. For example, different social media networks, for example, Whatsapp and Facebook horribly distracts my academic life besides affecting my concentration during the class lectures and outside the classes because most of the times I find myself going through them to view my friends’ posts.
Nonetheless, the excess use of social media platforms is highly beneficial primarily as the only way of developing one’s skills, for instance,
personal, communicative, as well as academic skills (Issa, Isaias and Kommers 140). Also, a large figure of students uses social networking as the only practical form of learning new enlightening information and as a means of staying updated on the crucial information. Despite these few benefits associated with the use of media among the children, its detrimental effects are significantly more pronounced.
For instance, unlimited use of different social networking sites and other media platforms horribly affects the students’ reading and writing skills since they make them lazy in using the most appropriate grammar together with spelling in their English language, and thus contributing to poor academic performances. Besides, late submission of the class assignments is another significant harmful effect associated with excessive use of social media platforms among the students (Anderson 89). The extreme distractions attributable to distinct social media usually compel students to procrastinate on their crucial class assignments, and this eventually contributes to poor academic performance in schools.
In conclusion, the detrimental effects linked to excessive use of various social networking sites and other media platforms outweigh the positive ones such as the only forms of learning new information and enhancing the students’ communication, and personal skills among others to a greater extent. It is apparent that social media distractions usually have increased the potential to lure the children’s concentration, and they thus fail to submit their class assignments in time. Besides, psychological dependence and dreaded academic impairment are other significant resultant effects associated with the extreme use of distinct social media sites and internet among the students. Also, unlimited use of social networking sites along with other media platforms greatly prevents students from
concentrating on their core reading and writing skills, as they become more reliant on the computer’s grammar together with their spelling check features. Consequently, excessive use various media platforms, for instance, Facebook, Twitter, video game playing among others contribute significantly to the students’ poor academic performance.
