In this essay, two authors' perspectives on the American educational system are compared. John Gatto's "Against School" opposes the flawed system and argues that schools are repetitive for both students and teachers due to their unchanging routine. Gatto emphasizes how schools provide identical education irrespective of a student's career goals. Mike Rose's "I Just Wanna Be Average" provides additional insight into this topic. This essay shares personal experiences related to these texts and how they relate to modern-day schooling.
Although the educational system aims to standardize students, it often results in required courses that do not match their career goals, resulting in tedium. While I concur with Gatto's criticism of the imperfections in education, these blemishes are more widespread among secondary schooling than higher education. Conversely, Mike Rose has a divergent perspective expressed in his essay where he initially only did enoug
...h to pass but eventually developed an appreciation for learning.
Rose refused to be ordinary and conform to the norms of his peers. Despite fearing ridicule from fellow students, he aspired to exceed expectations and achieve greatness. The introduction of Jack MacFarland, one of his teachers, transformed Rose's perspective and aspirations. MacFarland's impressive knowledge inspired Rose to pursue further education and self-improvement.
Thanks to the influence of a particular teacher, Rose achieved academic success and prosperity. Therefore, upon examination of both essays, I find myself in concurrence with the perspectives of both authors. I support Gatto's assertion that mandatory education is frequently tedious and centered on unengaging topics. Similarly, I endorse Rose's belief that a lone educator can provide the inspiration necessary for a student to achieve extraordinary feats.
During high school, I had a teacher who taught
business and motivated me to exceed expectations, resulting in national awards. While their perspectives on education differ, I concur with both authors as they present valid arguments.
