For this semester, my classmates and I were assigned to watch the movie Crash. This movie was held on Saturday, the 20th of September 2008 and lasted for 2 hours, from 9 am till 11am.

A day before I watched the movie, I looked up on the internet to find out who were the main protagonists of the movie and was surprised to find out that one of my all time favourite actresses, Sandra Bullock who plays the role as a district attorney’s wife, was one of the many actors in the movie. ‘Crash’, which was filmed in L. A, revolved around the issue of race and discrimination, which also happen to be the themes of the movie.I will now elucidate the plot of the movie, the characters involved, and how they are somehow indirectly linked to each other.

The movie started of with a car accident between a Chinese lady, Kim Lee and Ria , a Hispanic lady, who is the partner and girlfriend of Graham, an African-American police detective. The scene then shifts to Graham who discovers the dead body of someone whose identity was yet to be determined. It was at that particular moment, whereby the movie showed the events that took place the day before the discovery of the body.First of all, Dorri, a Persian lady in her mid twenties, had purchased a gun at a shop along with blank bullets. She did not know that the bullets were fake but was rather in a hurry get her hands on the gun.

Her father, who is a store owner, had asked her to do

so in order to protect his store from assailants. One evening, Rick Cabot, a district attorney and his wife Jean Cabot were taking a stroll along the streets and were about to get into their SUV, but were carjacked by two African-American men, Anothony and Peter. Jean Cabot has an immense hatred towards people of colour and her hatred intensifies especially after being carjacked.Jean has an elderly Hispanic maid, name Carol and is rather rude to her, but after one incident where she falls down the stairs, despite the way she had treated Carol in the past, Carol still helped and nursed Jean till she was better. Jean realised that Carol had always been her true, trustworthy and sincere friend for the past 10 years.

We later find out that Peter is actually Detective Graham’s younger brother who has been missing for months for getting into trouble with the law doing unethical things with Anthony such a stealing cars, theft and so on.Cameron Thayer, a well to do African-American director and his wife, Christine, who were on their way back home from an awards show, were stopped by two cops, Ryan and Tommy for performing a lewd act in their car. Officer Ryan was really rude to the Thayers and was utterly inappropriate towards Christine by touching her without her consent and she was exceedingly humiliated and hurt, not only because of what Ryan did to her, but also because her husband did not do anything about it. The other cop, Officer

Tommy, just looked on and was rather taken aback at what was happening in front of him.Later at home, Cameron told Christine the reason why he did not fight back was because people in general are really unfair towards African-Americans and he was indirectly trying to save her life by not saying a word to the cops. Later on, Christine gets involved in a terrible accident, and she was stuck in a car which was just seconds away from exploding and of all people, Officer Ryan ends up saving her life although she was extremely reluctant to let him touch her because of what had happened earlier.

Meanwhile, a Hispanic-American locksmith by the name of Daniel, who is also a loving and dedicated husband and father, comes to fix the lock on Jean Cabbot’s door. Just because of they way he looked, and the fact that he was Hispanic, Jean made an unreasonable assumption that he is a thug and involved in gang-fights and wanted the locks to be changed by another person the next day. Consequently, Daniel changes the locks for Dorri’s father, Farhad. Daniel tells Farhad that he needed to change the door, but due to language barrier, Farhad did not entirely understand what Daniel was trying to say and thought he did not want to help him. They get into a heated argument and Daniel walks away.

Farhad then takes the gun which his daughter had purchased earlier, and was on a mission to shoot Daniel, but Daniel’s little daughter jumps on him and gets shot instead. Miraculously, the bullets were faked and Farhad became a changed man after that close call. This particular scene as well as Christine’s accident, were truly the two most two heart gripping moments throughout the whole movie. In the mean time, Anthony and Peter knocked down a Chinese man by accident who is Kim Lee’s husband. When the two boys checked the content of the Chinese man’s truck, they found out that he was in charge of human trafficking.

Cameron was stopped by a few police officers later because he was suspected for carjacking, when actually, Anthony was hiding the car. However, Officer Tommy helped Cameron this time, most probably because he wanted to make up for the horrendous sexual harassment performed by his friend, Officer Ryan on Christine. The significance of this gesture was to patch things up between them because he felt guilty for not helping the Thayers earlier.Towards the end of the movie, Officer Tommy picks up a hitchhiker who turns out to be none other than, Peter.

Peter sees a miniature angel statue on Tommy’s dashboard and was about to take out his miniature angel from his pocket, unfortunately, Tommy assumed that Peter was taking out his gun and shoots him to death, and only then he realizes his dreadful mistake when he sees Peter’s angel in his palm. Officer Tommy then burns his car out of guilt and to destroy any form of evidence. He chucks Peter’s body at the roadside which was discovered by his own brother, Detective Graham. The movie was titled Crash, to show how people collide
