Many are the times that people make commitments that do not stick. For instance, one may resolve to stick a different diet to lose weight but end up splurging on a cake or to live consciously so as to pursue their goals bit end up sliding back into apathy. It is obvious for ones brain to start looking for causes when they fail to stick to their commitment. Maybe they may start concluding that they did not have enough time so as to be fully committed, or maybe they had to quit from that commitment since it seemed to be silly and so naïve hence wasting their time. But the fact is that this king of attitude is very futile and very disempowering, (Dagnelie & Boucher, 2012). Perhaps, instead of blaming circumstances one should pick on different usual targ

ets; their level of self-discipline and also their willpower.

One should be able to blame him/her and hope that if only they had the will power, they could have stuck to their commitment and see it to the end. This is a good and a positive reasoning but its major concern is that it does not solve the problem at all. The only good thing about this reasoning is that one stops putting blames on external factors and comes to the reality of blaming themselves. But the problem is still not solved. The only way that one can make sure that they stick to their commitment is when they have the will power and the self-discipline that is required. And therefore, until someone finds a way of increasing their willpower or their self-discipline, the will never make a

commitment and stick to it to see the aimed goals, (Dahlgaard, 2012s).

Discipline

The best way to understand what discipline is is to look at oneself not just as one person but as wide community of different people, (Leroy & Simons, 2012). One should realize that within them is enthusiasm, relaxation, anger, focus, sadness, playfulness, planning, and so many others. Although there are all these states that one can be, they can only be one at a time. But one state may not give chance for another state to be. One can have the good state of focus, but playfulness may come along and hinder the focus one had. Therefore, discipline is the ability to have all these variations of oneself to agree to function together. By doing so, one can have the state of focus and make sure that the other state do not affect it. The major reason that makes it hard for one to stick to a commitment is that the person making the commitment no longer exists by the time it has to be carried out.

Clarity is Key

Since everyone is the lawmaker of themselves, we all have a special power whenever we are making commitments. Literally, that is like making a new law for every other resident within us. Sometimes these residents may obey the new laws but some other times they may not. The use of vague language may lead to loopholes in the commitment. Hence, loopholes in one’s commitment spell the start of the downfall. For one to be able to make better commitments, they have to write these commitments with perfect precision and clarity. Vagueness should not be present and

one should fill all the loopholes. For important commitments, one can also get a friend who would help them to enforce it so as to avoid slipping.

Force is necessary

For some people, it might be hard to maintain the required discipline so as to stick to the commitment made. In such cases, it is necessary to use force so as to ensure that all the states in oneself agree to the laws that have been made. One can back up their commitments with meaningful consequences if their discipline is in disarray. This kind of force is known as leverage. For instance, one can give out a lot of money to a friend with conditions that not unless the commitment is fully accomplished, they should not give back the money. By so doing, all the unhealthy states like laziness will have to agree with the spirit and let the healthy state like focus have a chance. Although in most cases extra leverage is not so necessary, if ones commitments always end up failing they may need it.

Practice

Self-discipline measure can be considered to be the measure of respect that the several and different versions of someone have for each other. It is considered to be the ability of the version of someone of Tiresome, admits and agrees that one has to wake up early in the morning since that is what the version of motivation had said it should be.

Discipline requires effort, respect and time within oneself. As one becomes successful in keeping more commitment, all the other versions of him/her will have the desire and the willingness to keep them in the future. Every promise kept to

oneself create extra self-trust and therefore ends up building the foundation of further discipline in the future.

For one to be able to make even more firm resolutions, they need to make even more of them and also make sure that they successfully complete more. A person who is disciplined has created a very high degree of self-trust in his/her states of mind. It is this self-trust that allows such a person to carry out the orders that are made in the past even if they do not feel like doing it.
If someone is continually failing to stick to their commitments, then they either need to add more leverage or start smaller. It is either because the law that is enacted is strict to be upheld or the rewards or the punishments in place are not enticing enough.

When not to stick to commitments

Although it is important to stick to commitments and to make sure that the end goals are achieved, sometimes it may be the other way; may be important just to abandon the commitment. For some reasonable reasons, a person may have to slip from some commitments. A person can make a commitment before giving at a good thought of the process of the commitment and what is required. If maybe one has set a commitment to write a book, but they never get the time since they are at the office for long hours, they may be required to stop with the commitment. This is as a result of not giving enough thinking at the fact that the commitment would require a lot of commitment which would not be possible with fact that there

are other commitments that one has.
