Abstract

In this essay I will analyze some of the contemporary issues in education. Axiology, among other branches of philosophy, is discussed to relate to the teachings of moral standards and character development in learners. Currently, we live in difficult times whereby peace and human security are not a guarantee.

Education is a basic dimension of the long-term process of peace building, tolerance, justice, social conduct and intercultural understanding. Teachers play an important role in this process because they have the capacity to influence students’ thoughts and personalities. velopment and moral values is of essence. Education, since time immemorial, has been an efficient vehicle of culture and better still, a means of performing culture. Learning, as suggested by various theories, occurs through numerous ways among them observation, conditioning, development of skills and attitudes among others. This essay seeks to briefly analyze the philosophy of life, philosophy of schools and learning and instructional practices that affect education as a whole.

Several centuries by and still scholars, philosophers and researchers across the globe are yet to agree on a common definition of the term ‘truth’. Nonetheless, most people agree that truth is relative or rather subject to correspondence of a given language, terms or thought to a given aspect of reality. to a certain learner may differ in another. Thereby, it is necessary to gather all other factors that define one’s life in society. I believe that what gives life purpose is the ability of individuals to use what they know or believe; their comfort zones, to learn more and make positive change in the society (Bertrand, 1956).

Since learners come from diverse cultural backgrounds, it would be important to let learners familiarize with, work under and be held responsible for their actions by a commonculture of the institution that, however, does not compromise their own.In my opinion, learners should be molded into embracing virtues because they shape how one relates with one’s inner being and with the rest of the world. By so doing, they will not only be equipped to deal with any challenges in the society but also acquire international consciousness which brings with it acceptance and peace. They will thereby possess both technical and instrumental values which cater for individual needs as well as those of the society at large (Arneson, 2009). Philosophy of Schools and Learning Learners are encouraged to discover truth, as far as knowledge is concerned, on their own. Teachers can teach and guide learners so much but for learning to occur, learners should incorporate more than the basic skills.

For learning to occur, both teachers and learners should create an active learning environment which includes provision and acquisition of learning materials, creation of a serene environment free from ‘noise’ and above all, nurturing of positive attitude (Kirkham, 1992). From professional knowledge, teachers can borrow other supportive methods that will boost learning. These may include improvisation of learning materials, development of

mutual understanding of the two parties among others. Various scholars have developed theories that supplement the above mentioned strategies. Sigmund Freud’sClassical and Operant Conditioning theories holds that provision of the right material at the right stage will create the desired habit in organisms.

For learners to be able to formulate a learning culture, they must be guided through linking their background knowledge with the current subject. They can also be helped to link the concept with its significance in their lives as well as to society or their beliefs with their reasoning so as to arrive at meaning. Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory is also one of the simplest and almost naturally applicable theories in existence. Bandura argues that basic learning happens through mere observation. As a result, for learners to learn or develop positive skills and attitudes, they should be exposed to desirable environment factors. This starts by providing learners with role models as well as a good environment (Bandura, 1977).

Instructional Practice

To successfully implement the above mentioned theories, I would begin with behavior modification procedures. It is difficult to separate an individual’s values with their ability to perform. Learning occurs best where there is right attitude not just towards the discipline but to others and life in general. Teaching the essence of education is thus primary to this process. Subsequently, as provided in professional codes of conduct, I would encourage learners to imitate good role models, be role models to others and also report cases of misconduct to the respective bodies (Bandura, 1977). Lastly, I would guide learners through various learning practices such as basic skills or nurturing good teacher-learner relationships which in return

enable development of positive attitudes in learners.

For gifted learners, I will give them tests worth to challenge their ability and add to their skill while to needy learners such as those learning English as their second language, slow learners or the disabled, I will improvise learning materials or buy necessary teaching aids and also create spare time for remedial lessons. In sum, education is not just a vehicle of culture but also a means through which one can perform one’s culture. Education, as discussed herein, brings together people of different ideologies, capabilities and cultures into one society with common goals and interests. For learners to acquire education, this essay has addressed some of the major factors to consider. Some of them are: Culture, Learner-teacher relationship, Instructional practices and theories of educational philosophy.
