Although both "social network site" and "social networking sites" refer to this phenomenon interchangeably, the term "networking" emphasizes the establishment of relationships even between strangers. While these sites do facilitate networking opportunities for some users, that is not their primary purpose nor what sets them apart from other forms of computer-mediated communication (CMC).

Currently, popular methods of social networking combine various platforms. Facebook is widely used worldwide, while MySpace, Twitter, and LinkedIn are the most commonly used in North America. This trend has led to social networking becoming somewhat of an "addiction" for teenagers in this generation.

A teenager is addicted to Facebook, constantly checking for new updates and neglecting important school work as a result. This serves as an example of how teens can become addicted to social networks. To validate this notion, researchers conducted a survey to assess if social networking negatively impacts academic performance.

According to the survey, some people prioritize spending more time on social network services instead of focusing on their studies and school work. This discovery is disheartening because although social networking has its benefits, it can also have negative effects on users.

Profiles on social networking sites (SNS) are

unique pages that allow users to define themselves. After joining an SNS, individuals are prompted to complete forms with various questions, which are then used to generate their profiles. These questions typically cover personal details like age, location, interests, and an "about me" section. Additionally, users are often encouraged to upload profile photos. Certain sites offer options to elevate profiles by incorporating multimedia elements or customizing the appearance. For instance, Facebook enables users to enhance their profiles by adding modules known as "Applications".

The visibility of a profile varies depending on the website and user preferences. Profiles on Orkut or hi5.com are automatically indexed by search engines, allowing anyone to access them without an account. In contrast, MySpace gives users the option to make their profiles public or limit them to friends only. Facebook works differently as profiles can be seen by default by users belonging to the same "network," unless the profile owner restricts access to network members.

SNSs have different ways of distinguishing themselves, and this is seen in variations in visibility and access. Upon joining a social network site, users are prompted to identify their connections within the system. The labels used for these relationships differ between sites, with examples such as "Friends," "Contacts," and "Fans" commonly being used. While most SNSs require mutual confirmation for a friendship, there are some that do not. These one-directional connections can be referred to as "Fans" or "Followers," although they may also go by the name of Friends on several sites.

The term "Friends" can be misleading because the connection does not necessarily mean friendship as commonly understood, and the reasons people connect vary (Boyd,

2006). The display of connections is an important aspect of SNSs. The Friends list consists of links to each Friend's profile, allowing viewers to navigate through the network graph by clicking on the Friends lists. On most sites, the Friends list is visible to anyone with permission to view the profile, although there are some exceptions. Additionally, most SNSs offer a feature for users to leave messages on their Friends' profiles.

The feature mentioned here usually requires users to leave "comments," though different websites may have different names for it. Additionally, social networking sites often provide a private messaging feature that is similar to webmail. While both private messages and comments are widely used on major social networking sites, they are not available on all platforms. Apart from profiles, Friends, comments, and private messaging, social networking sites have varying features and user bases. Some sites allow photo-sharing or video-sharing, while others have integrated blogging and instant messaging capabilities.

Performance refers to the application of a learning product that results in mastery.
