Expectations

It was my first time to have a chance and work in an office setting. I have been taking up part-time jobs in the past, but none of them have I ever had a chance to work in an office. This internship was special to me for I used it to test my capability to work in an accounting arena. Accounting has been one of the most paying careers I have ever heard in the recent economy. I had this fancy feeling that money will be flowing in my pockets once I start working in the billing department of the accounting.

Getting this chance was a very sensitizing thing that has ever happened in my life. I took it seriously for once in my life history. The moment I started the job I had no expecta

tions of it being so fascinating. Just to tell it from my expectation, I thought accounting would be one of the boring daily routines that one is forced to repeat the same thing over and over again. It is just the application of the rules of digits which will never give you a chance to be creative.

It was one of my chances that I had to put my class work in the real life situation. To work as an accountant has been taken by many as a torture. Having this in mind I was pretty prepared to work the tiresome day out and in everyday duty. I was really anxious to put whatever have learned in class in the practice and serve the community. It is also a way of returning back to the community. It was a new workin

environment for me but to be frank I was courageous enough to work it out as if am an expert in the field.

It was very likely that I was in a position to commit as many mistakes as possible even in the process of adapting to the environment, but this never gave me an excuse to underperform. It was my obligation to get everything done the right way and in the case of any mistake, I was to be held accountable.

Week 1 (8th August 2016 – 12th August 2016)

A taste of the firm’s culture and the environment. The day was unwell started in the mental health clinic, though it is nothing serious to call for alarm. After all, it was a great chance for me to start in the hospital. My presence was also felt as well. It was a call for the orientation to the culture of the hospital firm.

This was the day for orientation. My dressing code was just the business casual. I had my fine suite and had loosened my tie. Once I stepped in the office door the receptionist was somewhat tensed and looked astonished. Then the boss came to my rescue but it was worse for he was there teasing me. It was a lesson to me, that in the environment, one should be free to ask and enquire from anywhere and at any time for emergencies are always expected.

It was also very helpful to know people and let the people know you. It was also a shock to find myself seated with my supervisor on the same bench. This taught me that everyone in the company was equal.

The week was rushing and I was learning. According to my expectations, the first week I used observing and following what they used to do as I tried to compose it for future use. I learned all things including how the junior colleagues talked to the seniors in the hospital.

The company is so free in its environment. There was this freedom to freely interact at any level and this made my environment to be so attractive to work in.

Week 2 (15th August 2016 – 19th August 2016)

My first week of my internship I spent observing how the things were carried out in the organization. The second week was for me to prove what I had learned and put it down. I officially started my internship main course.

I was to be posting payrolls, making sure that the checks that come by are valid and complete. I was also expected to have a look at the denials and the causes of the denials. If any adjustments were to be done, I was to take that initiative by sending the claim to Magellan Lehigh County. I was also supposed to identify all the mistakes before I make any correction and sending it to for adjustment. I was mainly on the reliance of my guidebook to get my tasks performed.

In this sense, I was not a burden to my supervisor. At the end of the day, I felt superior when I got all the records done and kept in place at the right time and in the right order such that they could be easily accessed. My supervisor was always thanking my efforts for the nice work

I performed every day. I could not hold it down rather, I could show it up every proceeding day I attended the work.

As the days drew by, I was getting bored as well as I was getting experienced. The work was just repeating itself. I had to get the incomplete checks, look at them, identify the faults and make sure I inform the insurance company about the problem. As the week drew near to the end, I was challenged to have to file payroll and post it for updates. This was my second week.

It the week that has more hours, 40 hours off work, compared to the first week which has only 20 hours of work. The good thing about it is that the long week never repeated itself but it came after the week of the twenty hours. The week ended with a great challenge. I had to get all the files arranged.

You can imagine having to spend almost half of my day arranging the files. It becomes a whole drama when you find yourself having placed a document at the wrong position. It pushes you to rearrange the whole bunch of the files to get it out and keep the documents categorically updated.

Week 3 (22nd August 2016 – 26th August 2016)

Time seemed to go slowly in the office. Though I had the vast knowledge of what I was doing more competent than the first and second week. The workload was not too much.

It was in me that every moment I performed I was sure I have done a perfect job. The right thing to me was that I was not much

used in the office before. So I was used to walking. The sitting here seemed to be tiresome, but what was I to do rather than keep on doing it. It was my line of specialization. It was in the past that I have been used into rushing things to fit in my schedule.

Now am routine and the work seemed to be too small to handle. This gave me a time to go through what I have been doing all through the day to make sure that everything went on well. It was a week full of consultations and a lot of interactions with the patients who needed help from me for their wrongly written names. The week was a full rehearsal and I was fully equipped to handle many things and I learned much from the experience I gained from there.

The week went on smoothly and my supervisor was becoming random for he was not forced to come to my rescue. I was routed into the routine and the work I did was almost perfect was there was no call for alarm. Once I was in the office, they knew everything was going to be fine and this was my pride. This was the week I knew pretty well that I can do whatever I really think is impossible as I try comparing it from the book.

Week 4 (29th August 2016 – 2nd September 2016)

The fourth week of my internship was a routine. Though it had long working hours, but now I was really used to the environment of the office.

I could do anything even when I felt am not able to

do it. This is because everything was becoming obvious that I could do it even without referring. The work was becoming repetitive. It was becoming more repetitive, less tiresome but all the same, the work was boring.

This is the same week that I had to meet my supervisor in his office to discuss, my progress and point out the things I saw they needed amendment. It was a bright week for me for I was taken out of routine repetition and now I was granted a chanced to think things out. Creativity was part of me. Observation and making of the conclusions from the society for the benefit of the society was what I loved most.

So I had an opportunity to point out some few things that I thought he should know about the office. The week ended well with the submission of the payroll and the arrangement of the files as I was to be back the following Monday.

Week 5 (6th September 2016 – 9th September 2016)

The week started predictive of the good things that might happen within the week. It was started with a holiday.

It feels good always to have a holiday on a working day. It the day for me to visit some of my folks who were on the hangout that day? We had fun and I tend to forget all the feeling of the hard work I had in the previous weeks. On Tuesday I was back on duty and I had to perform it to perfection. It was a day that was busy regarding the preceding day we never attended the patients. I was caught up the

whole day but I never complained because the memories of the holiday were fresh in my mind.

On Thursday of the same week, we had tom hold an evening coffee which instituted the whole of the interns and our supervisor. It was the time we had to talk whatever we think we cannot talk in an official realm. The day ended well and all were grateful for the day. The Friday was there and it was a mark of the end of the week. The week never seemed to be so obvious because we had at least changes that broke the monotony of repetition. Having a time out with friends and the work fellow interns was such an amusing thing that can ever happen at such a stage.

The week was closed with the keeping of the folders as they should be.

Week 6 (12th September 2016 – 16th September 2016)

According to the culture of the hospital, this is the week the workers and staff of the hospital go in shifts into visiting the orphanages and the old and trying to give then the hope of life. Wednesday was the day I got for me to move and meet these needy souls. Expectant with a lot of encouraging quotes, I was forced to say them in rush. But I delivered all I had to give to these young ones.

The time was limited for we had a lot of activities taking place before we settled for speeches and talks from the staff. It was now time that we showed the unity we had with them and show that our mission was not doing business with them but

helping the community only that we cannot do it for free. They were happy and we returned happy souls. It was the week that I had to compile the documents for it was the week I used to send the payroll. Having myself as an attaché here was becoming interesting.

I had gained a lot of knowledge and now chances are being created for me to realize some of my goals I never thought they will ever happen. Thank God am here.

Week 7 (19th September, 20016 – 23rd September 2016)

Having had two weeks that made me forget about the monotony in the workplace, here was another busy week. It was business as usual. This week I had to work for twenty hours. But all in all I enjoy the work and never feel discouraged to work.

There were no issues of having an outing but all I had to do was to have the numbers placed well and give out the right results. This is the week I also had a lot of checks to look at and sent them for justification. Many checks were rejected so I was busy this week dealing with the same. I had a meeting with the manager. He is such a nice guy.

He encouraged me to keep the spirit for he had seen the good work I was doing. He added that since I started working with them the issues of false checks have been a history and he commented it was a good work. He promised if I ever thought of working with him in the future, I should feel free to send an application. This was the

most amusing day of my life. The week was done to the perfection and we are ready now for the next week.

Week 8 (26th September 2016 – 30th September 2016)

Now that the environment is almost becoming adaptive, now I have am more pleased with working in this hospital.

This week was fine with less of the work. Though it is a week I work for forty hours. This made me be involved in the other works that were around me. I also got time to know more and more people than I could do while am working. It was the time now I realized that some of the management staff here form my college.

I had time to share with them the experience they have so far. Though it one of my busiest weeks that I have more working hours and am supposed to work on the payroll for submission, it was easy for me to do the same for it had become part of my routine jobs.

Week 9 (3rd October 2016 – 7th October)

It was business as usual. But this time round, it was a week we were to be involved in games and more interactions. The week never seemed to be so busy. It was taken to be a normal week which everybody had a time out of the daily routine.

Every week of work here was becoming entertaining. Though at first, the work seemed to be a hell, but now I promise working here is more than work but also includes development. Those who missed it in high school, now it was their time to experience it here. Now I had

a vast knowledge in the field such that I could accomplish my duties within a short period and manage to do other things.

It was searching an opportunity to have to do what I like most. With this, my twenty hour week seemed to be so short that I wished it could be increased. But all in all everything was well done and am happy.

Week 10 (10th October 2016 - 14th October 2016)

Now I was becoming idler in my work for it was more of repetition so I did not have much to struggle about.

This forced me to approach my supervisor to give me some more task perform. The reason being it was the week I had forty hours in of work. I was given the authority to be checking all the records that my fellow colleagues write before they turn them in. It was part of my favorite task. It never took much of my time though it liked challenging at the first time, but it was now sorted out with a time of hard work. The week was short because I was much busy and was never bored.

Week 11 (17th October 2016 – 21st October 2016)

My time in the field was elapsing and it was becoming more of a routine and enjoyable than it was before. The twenty hour week seemed like a single day and worked myself out to give the best. I could not believe that soon am going to leave the environment and go back to class. I felt as if am already employed.

It was fun for me and I was pleased with the team I worked with.

The work was just as normal. Sometimes boring, some other times it was awesome. I had a great moment this week but every end of a nice was week was a worry how the following week could behold.

Week 12 (24th October 2016 – 28th October 2016)

This was my last week. A week I had forty hours for work. It was the high time I had to utilize them and make sure everything was fine. It felt like the first week I came to the mental hospital as an intern. But this time round I was not confused about what to do but I was more confused by what I should not do.

The reason is that I was more used to working and the repetition of the work was now part of me. But all in all, I had to leave. The week ended well. I posted the payroll and returned all that I was entrusted to the safe hands.

Now I was free to go.

Achievements

Together with having to apply for my course work in real life situation, the hospital provides chances for me to meet some of my desires that I have been chasing for long and I never got time. I was able to meet the orphaned children, and engage in games. These are fundamental activities I have yearned for long and I never got the chance. Thanks to the administration of the hospital and the management.
