Throughout his childhood, Marshall endured neglect from his parents, leading to pent-up anger towards them. This is evidenced by his yelling at his confused mother and refusing to visit her in the mental institution or her own room. The neglect also resulted in tragedy when Marshall's younger sister Sally passed away, leading Miss Martha to blame Marshall for the loss

Marshall struggles to cope with the loss and channels his emotions towards others in an attempt to find solace.
Marshall endures repeated sexual and physical abuse at the hands of his tutor, Mr. Waters, leading to aggressive behavior towards others. Despite the hardships he has faced, Marshall's actions cannot be justified. Without a positive male role model in his life, Marshall begins to idolize Rankin, the overseer of
the plantation.
