Preparation Outline Title: Emission Control Advances on Diesel Engines Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my audience about diesel emission technologies. Central Idea Statement: There has been three major technologies added to diesel exhaust systems since 2003 including an EGR, DPF, and SCR that have dramatically reduced NOx emissions (smog gases). Introduction I. Who knows the fundamental difference between a gas and diesel engine? A. A gas engine uses spark to ignite gasoline while a diesel engine uses compressed air to ignite the diesel fuel. II.

What does this mean to you, well you all breathe air right? Transition/ Internal Preview: So 2003 started the wave of new technologies in diesel engines starting with the development of the EGR. Body I. An EGR or exhaust gas recirculation systems is part of the exhaust system which is also known as the tailpipe. A. Since it takes air to make an engine run and not all air is used when the engine is running some is recirculated back into the engine to be reused. B. This simple design of reusing unused air

(Phil Romba) Transition/ internal summary: Now we’ve looked at two systems helping diesel engines run clean, I will now introduce the 2010 system, the SCR. III. Selective catalyst reduction or SCR is the most recent system to be used to reduce smog gases from exiting the exhaust. A. This is the most advanced system in which a catalyst of urea, which is an organic chemical, is injected into a chamber with exhaust gasses which reduces the smog gases down into nitrogen and water. The only downfall is that urea needs to be carried in a tank on the vehicle and refilled every time the oil is changed. Transition: In conclusion we now know the three technologies developed since 2003, the EGR, DPF, and SCR and their effect on lowering emissions. Conclusion I.
When these three systems are used in conjunction together the strain on each on is significantly reduced allowing the diesel engine to operate at its maximum efficiency while still reducing smog emissions significantly.

Domestic and foreign automotive manufactures have collaborated on developing these systems and the EPA has invested millions of dollars into the research and development to make diesel engines run clean and efficient.
